"There was a real sense that the Queen was looking out for her as well," Russell said. "She had invited her for private chats. She spoke to her about headstrong husbands, which she had certain experience of," he continued, adding that Kate "really took that to heart".

Prince William and Princess Kate's no-frills BAFTAs entrance
If you're like us, you're probably still thinking about the Prince and Princess of Wales' entrance at the BAFTAs last night.
While they were undoubtedly the most anticipated guests at the 2026 BAFTAs, their arrival at London's Royal Festival Hall was surprisingly understated.
Prince William, 43, and Kate, 44, thrilled onlookers by making their first joint appearance at the ceremony in three years, marking a major return for the Princess. Despite the red carpet fanfare, their entrance into the auditorium remained low-key. With no formal announcement to signal their arrival, many guests only realised the royal couple was present as they quietly made their way down the aisle, pausing to greet fellow attendees. A palpable buzz soon rippled through the hall as heads turned to catch a glimpse of the pair taking their seats for the prestigious event.
Princess Kate's perfect red carpet hair
Princess Kate stunned in Gucci at the BAFTAs last night - but her hair elevated her look to the next level.
In previous years, the Princess of Wales has experimented with a variety of styles for the occasion, ranging from sophisticated, swept-up chignons to sleek, poker-straight lengths.
This contrasts with the royal's 2026 attendance, which saw her wear her hair in slightly fluffy mermaid waves.
"Princess Kate's hair had a soft, effortless feel, with loose waves that looked relaxed and naturally undone rather than overly polished," celebrity stylist Melissa Timperley told us. "The style had gentle movement through the lengths and a smooth but understated finish. Kate's off-centre parting gave the style a modern, romantic look."
Prince William and Kate's subtle message of 'unity'
With the eyes of the world on the Prince and Princess of Wales, their appearance at London's Royal Festival Hall for the BAFTAs served as a powerful reminder of their institutional significance.
According to Spanish designer Juan Avellaneda, their perfectly coordinated ensembles were more than just a fashion choice; they were a deliberate display of unity, connection, and resilience during a particularly delicate period for the monarchy.
The designer said: "It's entirely an image strategy. The British royal family doesn't do anything by chance, especially not on a red carpet like the BAFTAs. They use these kinds of appearances to convey unity, stability, and normalcy. The fact that they both wore burgundy is no coincidence. It's a very subtle way of appearing visually aligned, both as a couple and as an institution."
How Duchess Sophie modernised the 'grandma cardigan'
The Duchess of Edinburgh is a master of sustainable style, frequently restyling timeless pieces to make them feel fresh.
A key staple she champions is the humble cardigan, proving this practical layer is anything but frumpy in 2026.
At the 2025 Royal Windsor Horse Show, Sophie expertly elevated a ruby floral Ghost dress by layering it with a cream Isabel Marant cardigan. The tailored fit cinched her waist, offering a polished alternative to bulky jackets. By pairing the knit with espadrilles and a sleek hairstyle, she demonstrated how a simple 'granny' cardigan can provide both warmth and feminine elegance.
King Willem-Alexander's busy morning
It has been a busy morning for King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands who has stepped out at the palace to swear in a new cabinet.
The swearing-in ceremony began with the signing of the Royal Decrees by the King and the Prime Minister at Huis ten Bosch Palace. The new ministers and state secretaries were sworn in before the King in the Oranjezaal at Huis ten Bosch Palace.
The newly appointed ministers took the oath or affirmation. The constitutional moment of the transition to the next cabinet occurs when all ministers have been sworn in. They then headed outside for an official photo with the monarch.
Zara and Mike Tindall jet off with 3 kids
As students return to school today, Mike and Zara Tindall's children, Mia, 12, Lena, seven, and Lucas, four, conclude their half-term break. Former rugby star Mike, 47, offered a glimpse into their active holiday on Instagram, sharing videos from a snow-dusted France while promoting the paperback release of The Good, the Bad and the Rugby.
The seasonal getaway took place during a tumultuous week for the royal family, following the arrest of Zara’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on 19 February. Despite the headlines, the Tindalls appeared in high spirits, enjoying a classic family ski trip before the start of the new term.

Queen Elizabeth's 'private disagreement' with Meghan Markle

The book goes into detail about difficulties in the lead-up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding, including the late Queen's disagreement with the bride.
"[Royal author Sally] Bedell Smith described how Meghan 'refused' to tell the Queen about her wedding dress and had insisted on wearing a veil, which the Queen privately disagreed with, due to her being a divorcee," Myers wrote.

Late Queen not around to witness Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's downfall
HELLO!'s Royal Editor, Emily Nash, has shared her thoughts on the fact that the late Queen is not around to witness the downfall of her middle son, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
"On a day that rocked the monarchy to its very foundations, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest, I watched as the King stepped up for duty at London Fashion Week, showing no visible signs of strain," Emily writes.
She also likened King Charles to his late mother. Emily recalled: "Moments after her son Andrew announced that he would step back from public life, in the wake of his disastrous interview with Emily Maitlis on the BBC's Newsnight programme in 2019, I watched her present an award to Sir David Attenborough at Chatham House in central London.
"Her smile was warm, her conversation sparkling and even peppered with a couple of jokes. In other words, business as usual." She says it is a blessing that the late Queen is not around to witness Andrew's downfall.

Just hours after his brother's arrest, King Charles made his front-row debut at London Fashion Week, appearing not to show the strain of the day's events as he chatted to designers and fashion industry figures. The Queen was seen at an arts organisation in Westminster, while Princess Anne had the busiest schedule of all, completing a series of engagements in the south of Yorkshire.
Over the weekend, the Princess of Wales made a rare set of two consecutive appearances, attending the rugby at Twickenham on Saturday and the BAFTA awards with Prince William on Sunday.
Speaking to HELLO!, royal expert Phil Dampier explained that such a string of high-profile outings "helped project the image of business as normal." Here is what else he had to say.
