The Prince and Princess of Wales were the focus of attention during Wednesday's state visit, stepping out with flawless professionalism as they welcomed the President of Nigeria and his wife on behalf of the King.
Kate, 44, looked radiant in a Tolu Coker Cost dress, paired with a hat by Jane Taylor and earrings from the connection of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. She and Prince William made the picture-perfect double act, giving their guests a warm welcome at the Fairmont Hotel in Windsor, before taking part in the carriage procession.
The couple's official Instagram account later shared a slick video of the morning welcome, featuring a blink-and-you'll-miss-it gesture from Prince William towards his wife that almost went unnoticed.
In the clip, the Prince of Wales gently placed a supportive hand on Kate's back as they climbed into their carriage to make the journey from Datchet Road to Windsor Castle.
It was clear William, 43, wanted to give his wife an extra sign to show he was there for her in a rare moment of public affection between the couple. The Prince was keen to help his wife where he could, though the Princess climbed effortlessly into the carriage on her own.
Kate has gradually returned to public duties since her cancer diagnosis in 2024 and revealed she was in remission in January last year.
Delighting fans
The couple sat in the third carriage in the procession in the Irish State Coach, making their way to Windsor Castle after joining King Charles and Queen Camilla for the ceremonial welcome.
Kate and William's presence at the state visit was met with a delighted response from royal fans, who were eager to see their growing responsibility on the global stage. One fan even noted that Prince William was a "rock in the storm", while others praised the couple for their "lovely welcome".
One commenter said: "A such wonderful morning! The Prince and Princess of Wales look absolutely stunning!" A second added: "Aren’t they both so regal? Not to mention absolutely gorgeous!! Lovely to see these two stepping into a leadership position with such style, grace and confidence."
William and Kate's public affection
Traditionally, the royal family avoids public displays of affection, instead choosing to keep things private. In public, we can usually expect to see formal handshakes and curtsies between family members, rather than any overtly showy displays of affection.
But since Kate's cancer diagnosis in 2024, we have started to see a more open approach from the Prince and Princess of Wales in particular.
For example, they have started to share annual messages for Valentine's Day and have occasionally been seen holding hands on public engagements. In Kate's cancer recovery video, filmed in Norfolk in 2024, William was even seen kissing his wife on the cheek, while she giggled.
