In public, they're associated with marching bands and the National Anthem, but, in private, the Royal Family loves pop and rock tunes just as much as the rest of us.

Prince William once even joined Taylor Swift on stage with Bon Jovi and was seen "dad dancing" at her Wembley Stadium concert in 2024 – but his love for music started at a young age.

In fact, Princess Diana used to play 1980s rock hit The Wild Boys by Duran Duran in the car with William and Prince Harry when they were young boys, with the trio all singing along together.

Bass guitarist John Taylor revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: "When we met Harry and William, they said, 'Oh, we used to sit in the back seat and mum would play 'Wild Boys', and we would sing along. That idea stuck with me that the little boys would be going 'wild boys', that that would be a moment for them."

Duran Duran – which also consists of Simon Le Bon, Roger Taylor and Nick Rhodes – performed at Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Roger also said: "We have a bit of an attachment to the royal family, with Diana, because she was a big fan of (the) band and a big supporter early on. There's always been that kind of emotional thing going on with the royal family, so it felt great to be there."

Princess Diana's music taste

Princess Diana was close friends with George Michael and Elton John – and her friendships also informed her music taste. In Netflix's The Crown, her character, played by Emma Corrin, was shown enjoying tunes by Stevie Nicks and Diana Ross. In real life, her favourite song was 'Hello' by Lionel Richie.

At a charity event in 2015, Lionel dedicated a performance of 'Hello' to Prince William, who had joined him for the evening. He told concert crowds: "Many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Princess Diana and tonight we have Prince William here.

"I must tell you it is a pleasure to be with all of you but especially this gentleman, because his mother came to me ... and she said 'my favourite song is Hello'. So I thought tonight the dedication is to you, my friend."

In 2017, cassette tapes from Diana's personal collection went on display at Buckingham Palace. They included songs by George Michael, Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Celine Dion and Lionel Richie.

William's Mother's Day tribute

Over the weekend, the Prince of Wales released a never-before-seen picture of himself with Diana for Mother's Day.

The photo showed the late Princess with her two-year-old son in a field of flowers, taken at Highgrove in 1984.

The prince penned: "Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother's Day. W." Princess Diana passed away in 1997, aged 36.
