The reason we love polka dots is simple: they make us smile. In a world that can often feel heavy, there is something undeniably optimistic about a spotty print. Whether you’re channelling the trailblazing spirit of Princess Diana or the graceful modernism of the Princess of Wales, it’s time to clear some space in your wardrobe for the print of the season: Polka dot.
In the 1980s, Princess Diana used polka dots to navigate her transition from "Shy Di" to a global fashion powerhouse. Who could forget the iconic red and white puff-sleeve dress she wore to Nicholas Soames’ wedding? Or the crisp, monochromatic Victor Edelstein suit she chose for Ascot in 1988? For Diana, dots were a way to project approachable glamour. They were fun, yes, but when rendered in silk and paired with a wide-brimmed hat, they were the height of sophistication at that time.
Fast forward to today, and the Princess of Wales has taken that mantle and modernised it for a new era. Whether she’s cheering from the Royal Box at Wimbledon in a navy Alessandra Rich number or welcoming world leaders at Buckingham Palace, Kate knows that a polka dot offers a guaranteed win.
It photographs beautifully, bridges the gap between formal and friendly, and - most importantly - pays a subtle, moving homage to her late mother-in-law.
"There is a reason the Princess of Wales returns to this print time and again," says our Royal Style insider Hollie Brotherton. "It’s timeless, it’s respectful, and it never feels like she’s trying too hard."
My top polka dot picks for spring 2026
Why spring 2026 is the season for polka dots
So, why is this print hitting a fever pitch now? The Spring 2026 runways have taken the classic royal blueprint and given it a high-octane refresh. From Dries Van Noten to Valentino, polka dots made an appearance.
But how to style polka dots?
Stealing the look is easier than ever, but the key to 2026 styling is all in the confidence to bring it into a new era. To keep the look from feeling a little too "retro," celebrity stylist - and host of the hit fashion podcast Talk In Wardrobe - Ellis Ranson suggest a few modern tweaks.
Go Macro
This season, size matters. Designers are ditching the tiny pin-dots in favour of "coin spots" - large, graphic circles that demand attention. It's a case of go big or go home.
Pay attention to fabric
For those looking for a modern twist, look no further than the 3D dot. We’re seeing beautiful organza overlays where the dots are actually embroidered or appliquéd onto sheer fabric. It adds a layer of texture and luxury that feels incredibly high-end.
Go for outerwear
Polka dot nylon jackets are seriously trending - this is a slightly more modern take than your typical blazer. Ellis says: "The polka dot oversized jacket can be taken day to night. You just let the jacket be the moment! Team with jeans or a capri pant."
You can play safe
Take a leaf out of Princess Kate’s book and pair a polka-dot midi dress with a structured, solid-coloured blazer. It grounds the playfulness of the print and makes it office-ready. Ellis recommends the polka dot midi skirt, telling us: "We all love a satin midi skirt and it works perfectly day to night so introducing a polka here is a great way to elevate your outfit and create a more styled look."
Monochrome magic
For the ultimate Diana moment, go head-to-toe. A polka-dot blouse tucked into a matching skirt creates the illusion of a dress but offers the versatility of separates.
However, if you're prepared to take a risk, Ellis advises an unlikely colour combination: "Polka dots pair perfectly with pastels this spring and it’s a great way to warm up the print rather than just sticking to monochrome."
If in doubt, accessorise
Whether it's a clutch bag or a subtle scarf, there are plenty of options for a polka dot accessory. Ellis tells us: "If prints scare you, opt for accessories. A simple polka dot heel or ballet flat is a great nod to the trend. Also an Alice band or scarf can be tied round your hair or even your handbag."
