It seems Queen Margrethe of Denmark had a stern few words for her daughter-in-law, Queen Mary, during a public appearance on Thursday.

The royal family, also including Mary's husband, King Frederik, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, was seen outside Fredensborg Palace to attend a concert by the Royal Life Guards Music Corps for Margrethe's 86th birthday.

As the music played, Tilia, her little dachshund, walked between the royals, with Mary briefly breaking formation to give her a pat on the head. However, Margrethe didn't seem to appreciate the gesture, shaking her head and appearing to correct her with a firm few words.

One Danish fan told HELLO! that Margethe told Mary: "Jeg tror ikke det er den rette tid til det", which translates to "I don't think now is the correct time for that".

While King Frederik laughed and saw the funny side, Mary quickly obeyed instructions and stood up straight again. Mary and Frederik became the king and queen of Denmark in 2024 when Margrethe, Frederik's mother, abdicated the throne.

A royal telling-off!

It's not the first time a royal telling-off has been seen at a major event, however. At Trooping The Colour in 2016, Prince William bent down to have a little chat with Prince George.

But the late Queen Elizabeth II didn't seem impressed, and appeared to tell him to stand up. William didn't waste any time following the orders, with Prince Harry seen chuckling behind him.

But Harry himself was clearly mindful of making the same mistake and had perfect posture when the Queen turned towards him.

Queen Mary's difficult time

The outing marked Queen Mary's first public appearance since announcing that her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, had passed away.

The European royal, 54, who visited her hometown in Tasmania just weeks ago on a trip to Australia, continued to wear dark mourning clothes on Thursday, opting for a shade of navy.

The royal confirmed her father's passing on Monday, saying in a statement: "It is with great sorrow that Her Majesty, The Queen, announces that her father, Professor John Dalgleish Donaldson, has died in Hobart, Tasmania. He was 84 years old."

She added: "My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are grey. My beloved father has passed away. But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day, and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me."

Mary revealed that her father's health had been declining over the past few years, but they had spent some precious final moments together at the end of March.

A private funeral service is scheduled to be held, according to the royal household; however, the official schedule suggests it will not take place until after the weekend, when Mary's twin children, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, are set to be confirmed.
