The Princess of Wales clearly goes the extra mile to make all her children's birthdays as special as possible.

In fact, British royal Kate, 44, has a series of golden rules for her three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, who is celebrating his eighth birthday on Thursday.

These include making them all a homemade birthday cake, even staying up until midnight to do so!

In 2019, Kate appeared on A Berry Royal Christmas with former Bake Off judge, Mary Berry, where she admitted: "I love making the cake.

"It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it!"

Birthday traditions

This isn't the only way Kate seeks to make her children's days special. For the Waleses, it seems that the most important part about birthdays is family time, with both Prince William and Kate keeping a free schedule to celebrate.

An exception this year was William's visit to the Formula E team in Oxfordshire, but this took place during school hours.

Royal expert Claudia Joseph, author of Kate: The Making of a Princess, told Vanity Fair previously: "They are not ones for big celebrations - usually it’s just family."

Speaking to The Mirror, Historian Tessa Dunlop added: "It’s always about spending time together, [Kate's] quite conventional in an old-fashioned sense of the word, I don’t think she’ll shy away from the fact she comes from a conventional family."

For example, this typically involves simply "mucking about" with party games, days on the beach, and picnics out.

Prince Louis is celebrating his 8th birthday, and royal fans were delighted when Prince William and Kate shared the traditional photo of him.

A beaming Louis was seen on a boat during a recent holiday to Cornwall, in a picture taken by royal photographer Matt Porteous.

"Happy birthday, Louis! 8 today! [Balloon emoji]," wrote his adoring parents, in a picture shared to social media.
