The best loungewear for women over 40 who are in their 'I want to be comfortable AND stylish' era
Loungewear isn't just for doing nothing. It's for doing everything - just with better fabric and a lot more grace. One editor reveals her top finds for 2026...
Let’s be honest: in our twenties, loungewear was a pair of questionable grey marl joggers and a university hoodie with a coffee stain that had seen better days. In our thirties, we were often too busy climbing the career ladder and burning candles at both ends to even notice what we were wearing behind closed doors. But now? Welcome to the Second Act. We’ve done the high-octane hustle, we’ve navigated the steep learning curves of our careers, and we’ve finally realised that the most important person to impress is the one staring back at us in the mirror - even if she’s just heading to the kitchen for a second glass of Malbec.
Dressing for your 40s, 50s, and beyond isn’t about fading away into elasticated waistbands of despair. It’s about elevated comfort. It’s about pieces that say, "I've got my life together" even if the reality is somewhat different.
If you’re ready to elevate your loungewear, I've compiled a shopping edit of the best loungewear for us women over 40 who refuse to compromise on style. I've been a dedicated loungewear lover for some years now, and there are some brands I'm super impressed with. What's more, I've consulted the experts in how to look chic, stylish AND comfortable. Scroll down for top tips.
How I chose the best loungewear for women over 40
Fabric Integrity: I wanted natural fibres (cashmere, wool, cotton, silk) or high-quality blends (modal, tencel). My goal was basically to avoid 100% polyester.
The doorbell test: I asked myself one question: 'If the doorbell rang while wearing this, would I feel confident answering the door?' If the answer was yes, it's worthy of this edit.
My favourite brands: I looked at the brands I shop at, and the brands that understand a woman's body. I wanted a mixture of price points to cater for all budgets.
Effortlessly polished. You can answer the door to a surprise visitor without feeling the need to hide behind the coat rack.
We all have a long-standing love affair with Marks & Spencer, but the Autograph collection is where the real magic happens for the midlife wardrobe. They have mastered the designer-dupe loungewear that actually maintains its integrity after more than three washes. Keep an eye out for their pure cashmere relaxed hoodie and the matching trousers.
Luxe and expensive looking but at a reasonable price point. Expect soft-touch loungewear, timeless activewear, cotton-rich knitwear, and relaxed tailoring.
I have been desperate for a loungewear brand that didn't feel bulky and heavy, or too sporty and I've now found it with this brand - founded by Carl Tallents (previously the Head of Brand at Flannels and CCO of Matches Fashion). The clean silhouettes, premium fabrics, and thoughtful design has turned me into a fan of this brand born in the English countryside. My personal favourite? The Oakland zip-up sweatshirt and the matching joggers. Choose from barley, black or 'potting soil' brown.
You're the woman with her finger on the pulse. You know that Alo Yoga is the brand to be seen in.
Alo is a personal favourite of mine and I have around four Accolade sets because they're just so comfortable and wash well. As we move into the spring months, you might prefer the zip-up jacket and the matching joggers (you can choose from straight leg or cuffed). My top tip would be to size down for a less oversized fit.

This is home office-friendly workwear. You can also wear this for going out in loungewear - more like get-up-and-go-wear.
If you're after a set that'll work for all-day comfort but without ever feeling heavy or bulky. both the zip-up jacket and the matching joggers will be a dream. I love the sleek zip pockets that lie flat without adding volume, the adjustable drawcord for a personalised fit, and the signature gold Naia branding for a subtle touch of luxury.
It’s wrinkle-resistant which means it's perfect for travel. You can get up from a ten-hour flight and still look pristine.
Forget everything you know about shapewear being synonymous with suffocation. The Spanx AirEssentials range is quite literally like wearing a cloud. The fabric is light-as-air, silky-to-the-touch, and has a slight sheen that makes it look far more sophisticated than your average tracksuit.
For women over 40, the wide-leg joggers and half-zip pullover in classic navy offer a streamlined silhouette that celebrates your shape without clinging.
You’ll look like you own a vineyard in Tuscany, even if you’re just in your home office.
If you haven't discovered Rise & Fall yet, consider this your official invitation to the inner circle. Their business model is a game-changer: they use the same manufacturers as the ultra-luxury heritage brands but skip the massive markups.
For the woman in her second act, their cashmere hoodie and wide-leg trousers are non-negotiable. Why? Because cashmere is nature’s way of saying "I love you" to your skin. It regulates temperature - essential for those of us dealing with sudden, unexpected "personal summers" - and it drapes in a way that jersey simply cannot.

It’s the ultimate set for a woman who wants to feel sporty but looks entirely put-together.
If your style leans a bit more "Chelsea Pilates Chic," Varley is your North Star. Their signature DoubleSoft fabric is legendary. It’s smooth, structured, and has a weight to it that feels incredibly premium. Their Doublesoft set, with its oversized collar is a cult favourite for a reason - it frames the face beautifully and provides an instant lift to your look.
Wearing The White Company makes you feel like the kind of person who always has a perfectly curated bookshelf and never forgets to RSVP on time. It’s a lifestyle, darling.
No loungewear list for the discerning woman is complete without this brand. They are the gold standard for quiet luxury at home. The fine rib lounge sets in muted tones like oyster, mocha, and soft grey are the epitome of the trend.
This season, look for the trend-led sets - I'm leaning towards the relaxed rugby top with the super cool barrel leg joggers - and they're available in three leg lengths.
If you're reading this in the US, sadly this brand isn't stocked there, but you can find on Selfridges US.
If you want to feel as trendy as the cool girls on TikTok, well, this is how you do it. This is designed for real life and at a good price point. Perfect for relaxed mornings at home or running errands or catching up with friends.
kaiia The Label was founded in Manchester, and was inspired by the rise of loungewear. This brand - which you've likely seen on your TikTok FYP - has seen a +73% YoY revenue growth. Pretty impressive, hey?! There are lots to choose from - whether you're after pink, yellow, black, navy or white but I'm drawn to the oversized quarter zip sweatshirt with the matching joggers.

How to style your loungewear (so you don't look like you've given up)
To help us do comfort AND style, we spoke to celebrity fashion stylist Ellis Ranson - host of the hit fashion podcast Talk In Wardrobe - to find out how to be comfortably chic in 2026.
Fashion stylist and podcaster Ellis Ranson reveals the best tips on how to wear loungewear like a fashion maven
Opt for the same colour separates: Wearing one colour from head to toe (think all cream, navy, black or all charcoal) instantly elongates the body and looks incredibly chic. Stylist Ellis says: "Think about your tones. Monochrome moments are perfect for elevating any look, opt for block and colour drenching rather than prints and mismatch. When shopping for loungewear you want something that feels expensive rather than going baggy after one wash and starting to bobble. Quality over quantity in this department."
Don't forget jewellery: Throw on a pair of gold hoop earrings or a chunky chain necklace. The contrast between soft fabric and hard metal signals tells people that this outfit was a choice, not an accident. Ellis says: "Jewellery always elevates any look, layered necklaces, or a statement earring. All that added with a fresh blow-dry or slicked back ponytail and a great lipstick and you are ready to take on the world."
Consider structure: Ellis says: "Add a bit of structure to your loungewear. As much as we love Adam Sandler we can leave that for the Gen Z category. We want our off duty casual looks to still feel polished and considered. Throw on a tailored coat, or structured blazer because the contrast between soft and structured makes it feel chic. Consider the shape of your bottoms too, this is where you can add in trends alike the barrel leg for a trend-led look."
Mind the footwear: Ellis recommends swapping the slippers that have seen better days for a pair of chic shoes. "As a stylist your footwear can complete or completely ruin a look, so think if you are going for a full tonal look stick in that colour story with a simple trainer, loafer (yes we can wear loafers with our loungewear) but make sure it’s considered and feels part of the look."
Stylist and TV presenter Nicky Hambleton-Jones gives the lowdown on adding colour to your wardrobe - and the one colour that makes everyone look younger
