Nearly 16 years into life as husband and wife, Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have got life down pat, as spouses and as parents.
The Australian actor, 42, and the Spanish actress, 49, started dating in early 2010, tying the knot later that year. They're now the proud parents of daughter India Rose, 13, and twins Tristan and Sasha, who will turn 12 later this month.
What's the secret to their long-lasting marriage? It's all about "honesty," Chris explained in a new interview.
Finding joy in the "critical"
"There's an honesty, the north star of truth, that you're going to get with Elsa," the MCU star told People. "I can show something to a bunch of other people, and they might be like, 'Oh, great work,' but Elsa will tell me if it sucks."
He noted, however, that her more "critical sort of assessment" actually proves to be quite helpful, since it allows them to unlock their full potential with each other. "[She] knows who I am, and we know what each other can do," he continued.
Elsa herself added: "I'll tell him, 'That's actually not funny. It doesn't work.'" Chris further explained that he uses her honesty as a way of judging how good or bad something truly is. "Elsa's honesty is my barometer for whether something works."
"I take that with the films I do, the commercials, whatever," he continued. "It's like everyone else can tell me one thing, but I know that I'm going to get the absolute truth from her. And it's sometimes dressed up in gentleness from time to time, so that it doesn't shatter my soul, which I appreciate."
Big shifts
When Chris and Elsa tied the knot, they were living in Los Angeles. Just a year later, he made his debut as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that has made him one of the highest grossing stars of all time and catapulted him to worldwide superstardom.
Just a few years into the Marvel hype, though, Chris and Elsa decided to leave the United States behind altogether and move back to his native Australia, settling in Byron Bay and opting for a life filled more with surfing, horseback riding and hiking than the glitz of the Hollywood machine.
"It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in L.A. and not enjoying it, you know?" he recently told the SmartLess podcast. "Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else and then… you'd come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space."
Calling their decision to leave LA the "greatest," Chris explained that it allowed them to live free of the paparazzi, especially while his kids were still young, without impacting their work since they had to travel extensively for projects anyway.
"You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday? Like coming home for me is — it feels like a holiday," he gushed. "We have a big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf."
