The 1970s, for many, will forever be marked as a decade of freedom. Freedom of movement as mankind stepped foot on the moon just a year prior and freedom of expression as marginalised communities refused to accept a life confined to the shadows. Vogue celebrated the decade's unique fashion in its first issue of the decade, announcing "shawls, capes, ponchos – anything that can be wrapped, strapped or rolled around the body" was decidedly 'in'.

But it was the wearers, as much as the items draped on them, that defined the decade. From the self-proclaimed "first supermodel" Janice Dickinson to Iman, the love of David Bowie's life, 1970s models carved a path for a more inclusive industry and embraced the natural form in a brand new way. We're celebrating these incredible women by diving deep on what they've been getting up to since that flare-filled decade.

Jerry Hall remains one of the world's best-loved supermodels and most recognisable names

Jerry Hall

The Texan supermodel matched the sunshine of her home state with the bright lights of 1970s modelling stardom. Born on 2 July 1956, Jerry Hall started modelling in the 1970s and was immediately recognisable for her endless blonde locks and 6-foot-tall frame. The 69-year-old entered the world of acting in 1980 and had an almost 40 year career on screen with roles in Batman (1989) and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995). She was with The Rolling Stones' legend Mick Jagger between 1990 and 1999, with whom she shares 4 children, and tied the knot with Rupert Murdoch in 2016, divorcing six years later in 2022.

Lauren Hutton continues to appear at industry events and appeared in 2018's I Feel Pretty

Lauren Hutton

The model-turned-actress almost didn't make it as a model. Now an iconic name, Lauren Hutton was rejected by five modelling agencies before Eileen Ford signed her. Ford called Lauren a "believable" beauty. Before she was a household name, Lauren was encouraged to hide her trademark tooth-gap and told CBS Sunday Morning earlier this year: "I had to buy a little $300 plastic thing that went there, that I would sneeze out and lose."

The model started her onscreen career in 1963 on game show To Tell the Truth, later landing roles in Paper Lion (1968) and American Gigolo (1980). She was previously in a 27-year-long relationship with Bob Williamson until his death and later dated photographer Luca Babini. She is still a fixture in the industry, appearing at events like Milan Fashion Week, proving that true style never goes out of fashion.

Janice Dickinson faced criticism for her assessment of aspiring catwalk stars on America's Next Top Model

Janice Dickinson

71-year-old former America's Next Top Model judge Janice Dickinson certainly has the credentials of a 1970s star. She moved to New York early in the decade after she won the Miss High Fashion Model competition, later signing with Ford Models. Her cover credits include Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Marie Claire

She judged four seasons of ANTM between 2003 and 2006, before being replaced by 60s star Twiggy. At the time, following a reputation as a harsh critic of the show's aspiring models, she said:  "I was just telling the truth and I was saving these girls from going out there and being told that they're too short, too far, their skin's not good enough. I was to America's Next Top Model what Simon Cowell is to American Idol." She has been married four times and tied the knot with her now-husband Robert Gerner in 2016. The '70s icon has two children, son Nathan and daughter Savannah.

Iman and David Bowie were married for 24 years and met a year after she decided to step away from the runway

Iman

Photographer Peter Beard is credited with Iman's 'discovery' and just six months later, followed up on their bare-faced shoot with an offer to fly her to New York. Iman arrived in the Big Apple in 1976 to almost immediate success. Her '70s start led to a catwalk career, but the model decided to step off the runway in 1989. A year later she met singer and icon David Bowie. The couple were fixed up on a blind date by David's hairdresser who claimed he was throwing a huge party.

Bowie’s hairdresser, who told them he was throwing a “big party”. Iman told ELLE, "We went to the restaurant... and there was not a big birthday party. It was just me and David, and the hairdresser and his boyfriend." They remained married until the singer's death in 2016. She has two children, one from a previous marriage and shares daughter Alexandria Jones with her late husband. Iman has been lauded for breaking barriers in the makeup industry, launching her cosmetics brand in 1994 and catering exclusively to women of colour and remains politically active as CARE's first global advocate, a humanitarian organisation centring women and girls.

Rene Russo has made a name for herself in both the modelling world and film industry

Rene Russo

Rene Russo made a successful move away from the runway and into the acting world in the '80s, following her modelling fame from the decade before. She was scouted while still in high school by John Crosby and featured on the cover of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar

While she found modelling success throughout the '70s and '80s, Rene decided to transition into acting, getting her first role in Sable and later starred in 1988's Meanwhile in Santa Monica. Since then, the BAFTA-nominated actress has had roles in hits like Nightcrawler (2014), Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) and The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). The actress has been married to Oscar-nominated writer Dan Gilroy since 1992. The couple welcomed their only child, daughter Rose Gilroy, the following year.

Patti Hansen has been married to Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards since 1986

Patti Hansen

It's hard to imagine a world where Patti Hansen wasn't a model, for both her fans and surely the star herself. She was scouted at just 14 years old and signed to an agency two years later. Since then she's appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Esquire, and starred as the face of Calvin Klein.

Like many of her 1970s peers, Patti had a few film appearances in her twenties including They All Laughed with Audrey Hepburn and Hard to Hold with Rick Springfield. She met her now-husband, Rolling Stone's guitarist Keith Richards at the ever-fashionable Studio 54 in 1979. They started dating nine months later, when Richards was 36 and Patti 13 years his junior, and said 'I do' in 1986. They share two daughters.
