Britney Spears was arrested in California the night of March 4, allegedly for a DUI.

TMZ was the first to report the news of the 44-year-old singer's arrest coming from driving under the influence. A representative for the singer responded to HELLO!'s request for comment with: "This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable."

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being."

Records from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office that HELLO! has seen can confirm that Britney was taken into custody at 9:28 PM the night of March 4, and was booked at 3:02 AM the following morning.

The records did not mark a release date, but they confirm that the "inmate has been released," a few hours after being booked. While there is no mention of the specific charge, vehicular towing information has been listed.

A follow-up court date has been set for May 4 at the Ventura County Superior Court. HELLO! has also reached out to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Britney's career

Britney has lived life in the public eye for over three decades, ever since she made her TV debut as a child in the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club with other future stars Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.

In 1998, she turned to music full-time with the release of her debut single "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and its titular album, with both the single and album going on to become the biggest selling debuts of all time.

With more best-selling records like Oops!...I Did It Again, Britney, Blackout, In The Zone, Circus, and Femme Fatale, she has since become one of the best selling artists of all time.

Her personal life

Her life over the past few years has been rockier, however, ever since being released from her controversial years-long conservatorship in 2021. She has since effectively retired from the music industry, stating multiple times that she is not interested in releasing more music.

Her only two single releases since then have been collaborations with will.i.am and Elton John (the latter, "Hold Me Closer," becoming a global top 10 hit as the first post-conservatorship release).

In 2022, she then tied the knot with Sam Asghari, her third husband. However, that marriage ended in 2024 on seemingly acrimonious terms. In 2024, their divorce was processed and she was declared legally single.

"As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I'm a little shocked but … I'm not here to explain why because it's honestly nobody's business," she wrote on her (since-deleted) Instagram page.

The singer has been dropping hints about working on a new project in the latter half of 2025, however, saying she is penning new books, a follow-up to her best-selling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me.

"It feels good to depart into writing, to dream, marvel and understand the power of the imagination," she shared in a lengthy Instagram caption at the time, adding that it's "incredibly important for children to always know they can do whatever they put their minds to."
