Katie Holmes has switched coasts for the time being - for a very exciting reason!

The Dawson's Creek actress is now starring in Hedda Gabler at The Old Globe in San Diego, California, and shared pictures from the first few nights on social media over the weekend.

The actress plays the lead role in the much-anticipated play, and is having a great time bonding with her new co-stars behind-the-scenes.

Katie shared several images of herself and her work friends enjoying dinner together, including a picture where she looked particularly radiant while posing with playwright Erin Wilson.

Katie's skin was practically glowing as she smiled for the picture, looking stylish in a yellow floral top, with her hair scraped back in an up-do.

Other photos included the actress being lifted in the air by her co-star backstage during rehearsals, and another of them all taking a bow after the performance.

Katie's new play

Katie plays the lead role in the latest adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, which was written in 1890.

It tells the story of Hedda, a newly married, aristocratic woman, who is in an unhappy marriage with her husband, George Tesman.

Hedda - bored and wanting to feel some control - manipulates her former lover, Eilert Løvborg, an alcoholic, into relapsing and committing suicide after burning his manuscript. Hedda then kills herself after Judge Brack discovers the pistol Eilert used belonged to her, leading to him blackmailing her.

On her starring new role, Katie told KPBS: "I've always loved this play. "And just the opportunity to take on such a well-known role and work with Barry again and also work with Erin, who's done a really strong adaptation. We've been getting together for about a year now, meeting, going through different drafts, and I find it to be really exciting because it's a huge challenge. I think that this character is one that speaks to all women.

"There's pieces of her experience on that stage, I think, that are very relatable emotionally. Obviously, there's a lot of big metaphors and a lot of actions that seem demonic. But what we've tried to do is give perspective on her perspective."

Settling into San Diego life

Back in January, Katie shared a photo of her beloved pet cat, Eleanor, being held tightly while outside on a balcony overlooking the ocean.

The picture was taken in San Diego, giving a glimpse inside Katie's new home for the next few months.

Katie's life away from the spotlight

Since becoming an empty nester in 2024, Katie has got stuck into plenty of exciting work projects, primarily on the stage.

She has been supported by her teenage daughter, Suri Cruise, 19, every step of the way. Suri was seen visiting her mom during her stint on Broadway's Our Town in January 2025, and more recently while filming Happy Hours in NYC in August.

Katie raised Suri in New York City after moving there from LA in 2012, and the pair are incredibly close. Suri is currently studying at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, but often comes back to visit her mom.

Katie had previously admitted to having mixed feelings about her only child flying the nest. She told Town & Country ahead of Suri's departure: "I'm proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I'm really proud of her and I'm happy. I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that."
