Eva Mendes marked her 52nd birthday on March 5 with a rare television appearance alongside her husband, Ryan Gosling. Ryan was on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to promote the release of his upcoming film Project Hail Mary.
The appearance also doubled as a date night for the couple, as the actor was later joined on stage by his wife to celebrate her birthday. Ryan then surprised Eva by singing happy birthday on-air. The actor asked the audience if they would join him in a celebratory singalong.
"Here's the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow," said Ryan. "You'll cut all this, right?" said Eva to Jimmy as he replied: "No! This is your birthday!"
The celebration wrapped up with Ryan singing along as New Jersey’' North Bergen High School band played, while his wife thanked him with a kiss on the cheek as confetti rained down. The band appeared holding a flag that read, "Happy Birthday, Eva"
Eva and Ryan's love story
Eva tied the knot with her Barbie star husband back in 2022 and the couple share two daughters – Esmerlada Amanada and Amada Lee. The couple first met back in 2011 while on set of the movie The Place Beyond The Pines.
The former actress has long been famously private about her family life, rarely making public appearances with Ryan, and keeping their two daughters completely out of the public eye.
Project Hail Mary
In Project Hail Mary, based on the 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name, Ryan plays astronaut Ryland Grace, who is left stranded on a space shuttle with no memory of how he got there, and a crew that is presumably dead.
Instead, his only companion is an alien he discovers on board, who he names "Rocky" (voiced by lead puppeteer James Ortiz).
"As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing the sun, and save Earth. An unexpected friendship may be the key," reads the synopsis.
Ryan previously revealed that his two daughters offered him some constructive criticism during the production process of the film. "I made this for them essentially," he told Access. "As a family, I'd like a movie like this that I'd like to see. I just feel really honored that I got to make one."
He continued: "My kids have seen multiple cuts. They give me multiple notes. They're basically the only critics I care about, and they are very critical and very honest."
Ryan also shared that Esmerlada and Amada helped him run his lines. "Sometimes when I was working and I needed to sort of switch things up or whatever, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky," he told People.
