The second season of the beloved live-action anime series One Piecepremiered on Netflix on March 10, 2026. The show, which is already renewed for a third season, follows Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats as they search for the treasure known as the "one piece."
It stars Iñaki Godoy, EmilyRudd, Jacob Romero, Taz Skylar, and of course, Mackenyu. The 29-year-old Japanese-American actor, whose dad is the late actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba and siblings are both actors, is definitely in the family business.
Although he has a famous family, Mackenyu lives a very private life with his wife and child. Here's everything we know about the One Piece star.
Mackenyu's dad was a Japanese actor and martial artist, starring in both television and film. Sonny married Tamami Chiba in 1996 when he was 57 and she was 29. The two soon welcomed Mackenyu and his little brother, Gordon "Go" Maeda, who is also an actor, starring in several television shows.
On August 19, 2021, Sonny died after battling a COVID-19 infection.
He announced his marriage on the same day as his brother
Per multiple reports, Mackenyu and Gordon both announced their marriages on the same day. In a message written in Japanese, the actor wrote to his fan club: "When my father was alive, he was looking forward to my marriage more than anyone else, so I'm very happy to be able to tell everyone about it today, on his birthday."
Reportedly, Go shared the news of his marriage, writing: "I have recently gotten married. Although I am still inexperienced in many areas, I will do my best."
While appearing on the Japanese talk show A-Studio+ in 2023, Mackenyu shared that his life changed after meeting his wife. "There was a time when I played games from 12:00 pm until 12:00 pm the next day," he explained. "That was before I met my wife. [Now] I sleep properly, I eat properly."
The actor "won the lottery" when he met his partner
On the same Japanese talk show, Mackenyu shared with the host: "I definitely won the lottery in life. I've never met anyone as beautiful and as cute as her in my life. I say that everyday. The first time I met her, I knew I immediately wanted to marry her."
While little is known about the actor's wife – even her name is kept private – it's obvious he is very in love.
The same year the actor announced his marriage, it was reported by several outlets that he also became a dad. He was spotted on a walk in Honolulu, Hawaii pushing a stroller in late July 2023.
While One Piece is not Mackenyu's first live-action adaptation – he previously starred in Knights of the Zodiac and Fullmetal Alchemist – he would be happy if it was his last. The actor appears as Roronoa Zoro, a skilled swordsman and pirate.
During a January 2025 interview, Mackenyu jokingly said: "There's like 50 more seasons to go… when I turn 70 I'll retire playing Zoro."
The streamer's yet untitled adaptation will center around the Scooby gang during their younger days, trying to solve a mystery involving the titular Great Dane
