Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have shared why they are "so glad" their marriage proposal occurred before the rise of social media. During a recent episode of LIVE, the couple reflected on the special moment that unfolded in a rather unconventional way.
"People don't just propose anymore. They propose for social media," said Kelly. "I remember our proposal," recalled Mark, before Kelly added, "Well, I mean, was it a proposal? It was more of an idea. You were like, 'We have the day off from work tomorrow. Should we get married tomorrow?' "
"And you said, 'Ask me when you're serious.' And I said, 'I'm dead serious.' " replied Mark. The ABC host then admitted he's "so glad we didn't have Instagram and that stuff back then," sharing that proposals for social media are "so annoying."
The couple tied the knot in 1996, when they eloped in Las Vegas a year after meeting on the set of the soap opera All My Children. They went on to welcome three kids – Michael, Lola, and Joaquin.
Mark previously shared that he and Kelly Ripa split just one week before their wedding day during an appearance on the Skinny Confidential podcast. "It's kind of a funny story as we broke up the week before. I broke up with her because I was dumb, and it was the most agonizing week of my life and I just knew I never wanted to feel like that. I've never felt like that in my life," he admitted.
"We ended up back at my place, I lived downtown and I asked her to marry me. She said, 'Ask me when you're serious.' And I said, 'I am dead serious. We have a day off work tomorrow. Let's fly to Vegas and get married.'"
Kelly and Mark's wedding
In 2022, Kelly revealed that their wedding cost just $179. "$179 for a wedding, including airfare, cause we had miles and we had a canceled trip or something. But $179 in total total with everything," she said at the time. She added that if she and Mark "had to endure a large wedding, the planning and the seating charts and the venue — we would not have made it."
During an interview with People, Kelly shared that she often recycles her "off-the-rack" wedding dress from Barneys New York. "I took the tags off to wear it to our wedding and I wear it all the time now as a beach cover-up," she shared, adding that the piece cost her "a lot of money" at the time.
"I didn’t buy it as a wedding dress. I just bought it because it was really pretty," said Kelly during an episode of LIVE back in 2016. The dress had an under-$200 price tag and was acquired by Kelly while she was working on the soap opera All My Children.
The wedding dress featured a sleeveless design with delicate spaghetti straps and a figure-hugging silhouette. The entire gown was adorned with intricate lace detailing and finished with a graceful, floor-sweeping hem.
