The Hollywood icon turns 92 today, March 31, just another year in an illustrious career that has spanned over seven decades.
She started appearing on stage and TV in the early 1950s, before breaking into the movie world with her film debut, 1955's Oklahoma!. Her movie musical legacy continued to grow with hits like Carousel (1956) and The Music Man (1962), winning an Oscar in between for her dramatic turn in 1960's Elmer Gantry, playing a vengeful prostitute.

She experienced a career resurgence in 1970 when she was cast in The Partridge Family as matriarch Shirley, with the musical sitcom running for four seasons and even placing her alongside one of her own family members.
Shirley's family life has always been intrinsically intertwined in her career. Meet her famous family members, from her two marriages to her four children…
At the age of 20, Shirley met actor and musician Jack Cassidy, who was seven years her senior. They tied the knot in 1956, also going on the European Oklahoma! tour together. The pair collaborated together frequently throughout their marriage, especially on stage, and releasing multiple albums together.
They divorced in 1975, with Jack tragically losing his life in a fire at the age of 49 the year after. Shirley continued to mention after his loss how she considers Jack the "love of her life," saying in a 1983 newspaper interview: "I'm not sure if Jack were alive I'd be married to Marty."
In 1977, a year after Jack's death, Shirley married actor and comedian Marty Ingels, best known for his turn in the show I'm Dickens, He's Fenster. The pair even wrote a book together that commented on their odd couple dynamic, Shirley & Marty: An Unlikely Love Story.
The pair did separate multiple times, with Shirley even filing for a divorce in 2002 before withdrawing her petition. They remained together until his death in 2015, with Shirley saying then in a statement: "He often drove me crazy, but there's not a day I won't miss him and love him to my core."
Shirley and Jack welcomed three sons together. Their oldest, Shaun Paul Cassidy, born in September 1958, first became famous as a teen idol, amassing multiple top 10 hits including his 1977 cover of "Da Doo Ron Ron" that went to number one. He also ventured into acting, leading the '70s Hardy Boys TV series, further cementing his status as a young star.
He then dabbled in producing and screenwriting, known for shows like American Gothic, Roar, Invasion and New Amsterdam. Shaun, now 67, has been married three times (he's been with current wife Tracey Lynne Turner since 2004) and has seven kids.
Shirley and Jack's second son, Patrick William Cassidy, born in July 1962, ventured more directly into theater and musicals just like his mom. His most notable screen credits include the shows Bay City Blues, Dress Gray, Dirty Dancing, Smallville, and Ruby & the Rockits (which was created by his brother Shaun).
He's also appeared in stage productions of The Pirates of Penzance, Assassins, Company, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Annie Get Your Gun, Aida and 42nd Street. Now 64, Patrick is married to Melissa Hurley and they share two sons, one of whom made it to the live stages on the 12th season of The Voice.
Ryan, born in February 1966, briefly ventured into acting as well, appearing in a recurring capacity on the show Facts of Life. He has since then worked more actively on the production side, notably as a set dresser and swing for shows like Muppets Tonight, JAG, The King of Queens, Good Luck Charlie, Insecure and The Drew Barrymore Show.
From his first marriage to Evelyn Ward, Jack welcomed a son in April 1950, David Cassidy. David met his stepmother Shirley for the first time when he was just six years old, and they quickly grew close, compounded especially by the time they started co-starring in The Partridge Family. David played Keith Partridge, a role that made him a global teen idol.
At the same time, he received global recognition for his music career, especially with breakout debut single "Cherish" that was a global top ten hit. His songs were especially big in the United Kingdom.
Throughout his lifetime, David was married thrice, welcoming two children. His daughter Katie Cassidy, now 39, is an actress as well, best known for playing Black Canary in Arrow. In 2017, at the age of 67, David passed away from liver failure.
