Helena Bonham Carter is no longer part of the all-star cast of The White Lotus, as she has exited the show just days after filming began on season four.
The 59-year-old was set to join newcomers including Heather Graham, Sandra Bernhard, and Vincent Cassel in Mike White's popular HBO murder mystery series, but her role will now be "rewritten" and "recast."
"With filming just underway on Season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set," an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline.
"The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks."
The statement added: "HBO, the producers, and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon."
Many fans of the show were saddened to learn of Helena's exit, with one commenting on Instagram: "Well damn. She was my main draw this season." Another said: "Why Helena Why?!" A third added: "I'm depressed."
A fourth groused: "No way im watching this show now. I didn't complete the third season and wasn't planning to watch whatever is coming next from this show and when they announced they have cast helena I was so excited and now that she left I'm leaving too."
The fourth season will also feature Rosie Perez, Kumail Nanjiani, Max Greenfield, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, and AJ Michalka. Production began last week in the French Riviera.
The show follows the exploits of the guests and staff at a different location of the White Lotus resorts each season.
Season one saw actors like Jennifer Coolidge, Sydney Sweeney, Alexandra Daddario, Connie Britton, and Jake Lacy portray tourists at a Hawaiian resort.
Season two welcomed Meghann Fahy, Theo James, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, Haley Lu Richardson, and Tom Hollander as they took on Sicily.
The third season, which aired in 2025, saw Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, and Patrick Schwarzenegger in Thailand.
Fans were in uproar when an incestuous storyline was teased in the season three premiere, which featured Jason Isaacs playing a wealthy businessman who brings his family to the hotel for a vacation, including his wife, Victoria, his two sons, Saxon and Lochlan, and his daughter, Piper.
In the episode, Saxon, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, insists that Lochlan can't share a room with their younger sister, so they share instead and begin discussing their sister inappropriately before having an X-rated discussion of their own.
Mike White opened up about what to expect in Vanity Fair, saying: "It’s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don’t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that’s a good thing… I’m super excited about the content of the season."
