Tan France just majorly confused his fans. The Queer Eye star stepped out with a brand new look, making him unrecognizable to many of his closest followers.
On Thursday, April 30, Tan, 43, shared a video to Instagram of him with dark brown hair instead of his signature silver locks. "I know my hair is dark, it's fine," he told his over three million Instagram followers.
"Well, it's not," he continued. "I know it's very weird to see me with dark hair."
But for those who were afraid that this transformation was permanent, don't fret. Tan revealed that he dyed his hair a dark brown "for a role." He had no intentions of telling the internet, until being out in the world a few times with his new look and getting confused looks from fans.
"This is not a mid-life crisis," Tan clarified. "I hate dark hair on me. I love my silver hair. I'm not ashamed of my grays, I'm really proud of them. This is just for work and we're gonna go right back to my natural color within the next month or two."
While Tan didn't reveal what role required such a transformation, according to his IMDb, he's currently filming the holiday comedy Clashing Through the Snow alongside Christopher Briney, Julia Fox, Lukas Gage, and more.
Celebrity reactions to Tan France's hair transformation
Regardless of Tan's assurances that the look is not permanent, his famous friends had many thoughts. Gigi Hadid, who Tan co-hosted Netflix's Next in Fashion with, wrote: "Hahahahaha Tannyyyy this is u in a parallel universe."
Tan's fellow Queer Eye host, Antoni Porowski commented: "My brain is glitching so hard rn." And comedian Sarah Millican wrote: "Sorry who is this?"
Nigel Xavier, who won season two of Next in Fashion, wrote on Tan's post: "Yoooo I thought this was AI." And, British actor, Rahul Kohli, known for his role in iZombie, commented: "James Bond."
The fashion expert's longtime husband, artist Rob France, shared his and their two sons' thoughts on Tan's new look too.
"At least it's been a few days so the boys aren't laughing anymore," Rob wrote to Instagram. "You look beautiful as always, Mashallah. That being said, nothing beats your silver."
Other times Tan France has changed his look
Tan's new brunette hair isn't the first time he's updated his look. The Queer Eye host debuted a short haircut in January 2025 after his iconic pompadour received backlash on the Internet.
"I would love to say it's because I just fancied a change," the stylist told Page Six at the time. "But really, what sparked it was I did something that I try really hard not to do – which is I looked at comments about myself after the new season."
