Kathy Bates made a striking appearance on the red carpet as she stepped out at a major Los Angeles gala, showcasing her noticeably slimmer figure in an effortlessly chic look. The 77-year-old Oscar-winning actress attended the 29th Annual UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation's Taste For A Cure event at the Fox Studio Lot on Friday May 1, where she posed for photos in a sophisticated all-white ensemble.
Kathy opted for a tailored double-breasted blazer layered over a matching blouse, paired with a flowing pleated skirt that added soft movement to the structured look. She completed the outfit with coordinating white shoes and a small handbag, while oversized sunglasses and a sleek updo gave the ensemble a polished, modern edge. The star appeared confident and radiant as she walked the red carpet, with her recent weight loss drawing attention from fans and onlookers alike.
The annual fundraising event brought together a host of high-profile names from across the entertainment industry. Among those in attendance were Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, Yara Shahidi, as well as media executive Dana Walden and Byron Allen, who attended with wife Jennifer Lucas.
The evening honoured George Cheeks and supports the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation’s ongoing work in cancer research and patient care. Kathy and George appeared onstage together for the event.
Kathy’s health journey began around 2017, when she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes – a turning point she has spoken about candidly. "[Diabetes] runs in my family, and I'd seen what my father had gone through," she previously told People. "He had had a leg amputation. One of my sisters is dealing with it very seriously, and it terrified me. It scared me straight."
Rather than chasing quick fixes, Kathy said she focused on gradual, sustainable lifestyle changes, including adjustments to her diet and increasing daily movement. She has also been open about using a GLP-1 medication as part of her broader wellness approach. Addressing speculation around her transformation, she told Variety that the medication helped her lose the final 15 to 20 pounds – but only after years of consistent effort.
"It took me years to do this," she explained. "When Ozempic came along, I was able to lose the last bit and keep it off." More importantly, the Oscar winner says the changes have given her a new lease on life. "Now that I've been able to get really healthy, I can move, I can breathe, I can have fun," she said – a sentiment reflected in her relaxed, joyful presence on the red carpet.
