Approaching the four-month anniversary of his death, Kimberley Van Der Beek shared a sweet statement on Tuesday with her instagram followers, opening up about the reality of life after losing her late husband.
James Van Der Beek, 48, passed away on the 11th of February 2026, after a long battle with colorectal cancer, leaving behind his wife Kimberly, 44, and their six children.
The wife of former Dawson’s Creek star shared on her instagram several videos of James from before his passing, where he spoke candidly about parenting and his feelings on the term "miscarriage."
The first story saw James discussing the importance of letting kids feel and process their pain, and why adults shouldn't try to immediately "bypass" it, from July of 2023.
"Allow them to feel their own pain - and watch how quickly they get over it on their own," Kimberly captioned the sweet clip.
It seems James’s wife was looking back fondly over her husband’s content, as she followed up the first with another from the Bathroom Chronicles podcast in March 2023. The snippet showed late husband James explaining his issues with the term ‘miscarriage’, as it implied the woman is solely at fault.
Having suffered with fertility issues and lost pregnancies throughout her marriage to James, Kimberely didn’t hesitate to share how important hearing her husband say this was.
The caption read: "I am so blessed I got to be married to this man and go through pregnancy loss and having babies with him 🥹".
On May 12th, the widow shared another heartbreaking post, with several photos of James and his family, showcasing their tight bond, commemorating three months since his death. "Yesterday was three months since we lost @vanderjames," she penned. "To say I'm heartbroken is a severe understatement. Words just don't capture what grief is. The comforts of shock have worn off."
"The reality is settling in... and I miss him. We all miss him. Yet, there is a different kind of magic in the air. I feel him. I know him more deeply," she continued.
In the wake tragedy, Kimberley and her six children are said to be facing an uncertain future, as the costs of James' medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.
A friend of James’s set up a GoFundMe page to benefit his family in the wake of extensive medical costs and living expenses during his illness. While initially, the goal was set to $500k, this was then extended to $1.5 million due to the sheer volume of donations, as it became obvious the world was keen to help the beloved star’s family.
"Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care," the GoFundMe read.
For his children, Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four - “it's been grounding, and a different kind of education that we never could have offered them in a classroom," James’s representative told People, concerning the couple’s crippling $270,000 tax debt in 2021 and 2022.
Kimberly concluded her post’s caption by giving thanks for all the support she and her family have received during one of the hardest times of their lives - both emotionally and financially. As she described the outpouring of love and support from others as "tremendous," adding she "could have never expected" it.
