The Princess of Wales stepped out for a day of engagements in London with her husband on Thursday, making a stop at London's Borough Market

Navigating the crowds that had gathered at the market in Southwark, Kate, 44, dressed her business chic ensemble with an unexpected footwear choice – a royal take on cowboy boots. Her Jimmy Choo ankle boots featured a low block heel and suede finish.

They also featured the pointed toe and contrasting sole often associated with cowboy boots. The dark grey boots added a more contemporary touch to her workwear look, which featured black cigarette trousers and a checked grey blazer by Catherine Walker.

The blazer featured single-breasted buttons and a subtle pale blue thread running through to tie in with her soft blue fitted shirt. The royal also accessorised with a black leather belt with a gold buckle and styled her brunette locks in loose waves.

Though the princess' boots from her day in London weren't cowboy boots in the truest sense (reaching the knee and featuring embroidered detailing), there was a time when she embraced the aesthetic fully.

In 2011, Kate was the ultimate cowgirl while watching the Calgary Stampede Parade in Canada. She donned not only cowboy boots, but flared jeans, a statement belt and a white cowboy hat.

Meanwhile, she recycled the statement boots in 2016 as she headed out on a fishing trip with Skidegate youth centre children during the Royal Tour of Canada. This time, the boots paired perfectly with khaki skinny jeans and a scarlet heavy knit jumper.

Caroline Sullivan, a London-based fashion stylist with over 15 years of experience, previously told us why Kate's boots stand the test of time. "Like many trends that come back, Americana and more importantly the cowboy boot is more than just a statement of nostalgia, it allows you to toughen up an otherwise 'pretty' dress with a black leather pair to soften an otherwise formal look," she said.

"Kate's outfit would still work today if she swapped out the skinny khaki jeans for a true blue, relaxed pair."

Kate's Christmas look featured Gianvito Rossi boots

The royal last wore statement boots in December while heading out on the Sandringham estate to attend church with members of the royal family on Christmas Day. Centring her look around the BLAZÉ Milano 'Lahloo Anyway' coat, Kate also donned Gianvito Rossi brown suede boots, as well as a Gucci checked wool-twill midi skirt.

She accessorised with DeMellier's 'Small Hudson' bag to match her felt percher hat by Juliette Botterill Millinery.
