Princess Kate's pre-royal Zara mini skirt may just be her most preppy choice yet

The mother of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis has always been a fan of the great British high street

As the Princess of Wales has become older, fashion fans have noticed that her clothing style has changed considerably. Although her famously classic style ethos still stands, Kate tends to invest in more designer pieces now, which she rewears far more. The royal also dons a lot of custom-made creations that have an expert fit, as opposed to off-the-peg ensembles.

However, there was a time when Prince William's wife headed to the high street for a number of her clothes. Just like many, she was a fan of Zara and often invested in some of the brand's most popular items.

Kate first wore this Zara mini skirt in 2007

One of Kate's most versatile, long-standing pieces from the Spanish high-street mecca was a crisp white denim mini skirt. Designed in white, it featured a double vent at the hem and was cut in a classic silhouette that fell just above the knee. Kate purchased the style in 2007, and was pictured shopping in Marks & Spencer's wearing it, and she also sported the style at the Badminton Horse Trials that year.

Kate's preppy look included a cable-knit jumper

Pictured walking across a field, the royal paired the piece with a chunky tanned belt featuring a large buckle, and a crisp white shirt layered under a V-neck cable-knit jumper. For good measure, she finished the look with sunglasses and calf-length boots.

Clearly a beloved fashion item, Kate wore the style five years later in 2012, at the London Olympics. Then known as the Duchess of Cambridge, she watched the UK women's Hockey team at the Hockey Centre at the Olympic Park.

This look was casual yet smart

Kate teamed the skirt with a simple cream, sporty top and accessorised with a woven belt in the same hue. This style is what many would deem as preppy; a classic blend of high-quality designs that are simple and made with either cotton, denim, or cashmere. Think shirts, round-neck jumpers, and prints associated with college, like plaid. Chinos, polo shirts and various tailored denim pieces are a big part of this look.

Kate's Zara skirt is no longer available - but this similar style from Crew Clothing holds a similar cut and would look great with a simple white shirt or cable knit jumper, like this White Company design.

When trying to pull off the preppy look, it's important not to overdo the accessories and stay away from trend-led items - this type of dressing is known to be timeless, so added fashion fads aren't needed.
