There's nothing like tuning into a detective show and attempting to figure out who committed the crime before the detective inevitably catches the baddie.

One popular show that aired in 1979 was Shoestring, which focused on the exploits of Eddie Shoestring, a former computer technician turned 'Private Ear' who would solve the cases of his listeners for free.

Despite the popularity of the show, its star, Trevor Eve, quit after just two series, in order to "diversify" his roles in theatre. The move proved to be a good one for the star, who landed his first major film role shortly after starring in the series and has gone on to have an illustrious career.

He still remembers his roots, and back in 2024, he shared a promotional photo from the series. In the snap, his popular character was seen in his signature scruffy suit while sitting inside a radio station. He captioned the post: "Flashback Friday: as Eddie Shoestring in BBC's 'Shoestring', 1980."

Fans were quick to share their recollections of the show at the time, with one commenting: "My mum made me watch this, and by chance, came across a few episodes, and now I'm making my son watch it. Still brilliant."

A second added: "Was 14 years old when I watched this show! One I'll never forget!" while a third posted: "I was catering for him on set in Bristol on location. Great fun we had then," and a fourth wrote: "My teenage crush. It was delightful to have met you."

But have you ever wondered what Trevor did following the success of Shoestring? Here's all you need to know…

Career

Off the success of Shoestring, Trevor landed his first major role, when he played Jonathan Harker in the 1979 adaptation of Dracula, in which he starred in alongside Laurence Olivier. He also played the iconic actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in 1989's Scandal.

Speaking to The Times about what he learnt from Dracula, the star said: "Hard work, diligence, a kind of perfectionism, and he [Laurence] was like a tiger, to get through what he believed in. It set me in certain areas on the wrong course, because I just fought my corner for what I believed. He really respected acting."

On TV, the star appeared in the likes of Shadow Chasers, The Politician's Wife, Kidnap and Ransom and A Discovery of Witches. However, his biggest role would be as Peter Boyd in Waking the Dead, playing the character for 11 years.

The star is known for his "difficult" reputation, often asking for reshoots on projects and heavily scrutinising scripts, and he admitted to The Times that this reputation has cost him roles in the past.

"I regret it hugely, which is why I've kept my mouth shut for ten years," he explained. "I don't listen to rumour, reputation and all those things. People go, 'They're really awful, they're so rude,' [then] you get to work with them and they're usually delightful."

Away from the screen, Trevor is also the co-founder of Projector Productions, which has produced television films like Cinderella and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Famous family

In 1979, Trevor met fellow actor Sharon Maughan when they both appeared in a production of Filumena, and the couple married a year later. In 2009, the couple were living in Belgravia and extensively renovating their property.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph at the time, Trevor joked: "I know every screw and nail in the entire house." Sharon added: "We want to have a connection with history. Trevor would like to live in an art gallery, but we want it to be a home and comfortable to live in."

The couple have welcomed three children, Alice, Jack and George, and their daughter has followed them into the acting business. The actress has appeared in major blockbusters like Men in Black 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and Sex and the City 2. She has also starred in TV hits like Iron Fist and the Belgravia franchise.

In 2010, the trio all appeared together in She's Out of My League, where they played a father, mother and daughter.
