At 49, Kerry Washington is an Emmys winner, Tony and Golden Globes nominee, author, director, and activist. But as she looks towards turning 50, the Scandal star tells HELLO! that she has just one goal.
"I hope I continue to stay committed to evolving and growing, being curious, being of service, and reaching for excellence," the mom-of-two shared. "I think the journey should be consistent with what it's been [already]. Life just gets better."
For many, turning 50 can be a moment that leaves more questions than answers, and Kerry shares that she hasn't yet "wrapped my head around" the milestone, which will come in January 2027.
In the meantime, Kerry is focusing on work – she has a new Apple TV+ series Imperfect Woman dropping on March 18 and a new film, directed Ben Affleck, coming this year – and her ongoing activism in the breast cancer awareness space.
Kerry's mom Valerie was diagnosed in 2004, at what was a pivotal time for Kerry in her own life, and it impacted the way she approached life.
"My mom is a powerful example of somebody who is willing to fight the fight to live her life, and that's such a powerful reminder for me," says Kerry. "Never take a day for granted, a day with her, or a day on earth."
Kerry was the Courage Award Recipient at "An Unforgettable Evening" hosted by the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, which aims to raise funds for cancer research.
Before she was welcomed to the stage, gala chair Jamie Alexander Tisch told attendees that there was a special guest from Kerry's past - someone whom Kerry attended the Boys and Girls Club with in the Bronx as a young girl - in attendance to give Kerry her award: Jennifer Lopez
Kerry gave Jennifer a huge hug after making her way on stage, sharing her shock at the appearance. "It's a surprise!" exclaimed Jennifer.
Kerry read from her memoir Thicker Than Water as part of her acceptance speech, sharing the moment her mom received the diagnosis, and dedicating the award to her beloved mother.
"Receiving the Courage Award from the Women's Cancer Research Fund means so much to me… but as I said in my speech last night: I do not deserve it! If there is anyone I know who is an example of courage in the face of cancer, it is my brave and bad*ss cancer surviving mother," Kerry later shared with fans on Threads.
"When cancer first entered her life 24 years ago, she faced it with a strength, grace, and determination. Every single day, her fight continues to teach me what courage really looks like. So I accept this award with deep gratitude… but only because I dedicate it to Valerie Washington. To every person facing cancer and to your loved ones, you inspire me. I am sending you prayers of love and healing and faith.""AND ALSO!!!! having this honor be presented by our fellow Bronx sister @jlo somehow made the night even MORE special. THANK YOU JEN - what an insane surprise!!!! LOVE YOU," Kerry concluded.
