Kate Hudson has opened up about the similarities she shares with her biological father, Bill Hudson. During an interview on the TODAY Show, Kate was asked where she inherited her talent for singing from.
"My mom can carry a good tune," she replied. "But my father, Bill, is a musician, and I have a feeling my musical songwriting side comes from the Hudsons. My grandfather, my mom's father, was a professional violinist, so definitely though it's a Hudson trait."
Goldie Hawn was married to Bill from 1976 to 1982, during which they welcomed two children, daughter Kate and son Oliver Hudson. The siblings had a complicated relationship with Bill, who Goldie previously described as an "absentee father." Kate and Oliver were primarily raised by Goldie and her partner of over 40 years, Kurt Russell, whom they refer to as their "Pa."
While Kate rarely speaks about her relationship with Bill, she did share an insight into where they are today during an interview with The Guardian back in December. "I don't really have one," she said, before adding: "It's warming up."
The pair share a complicated relationship and Bill addressed the strained dynamic in his book, 2 Versions: The Other Side of Fame & Family. The book detailed Bill's life and career, discussing his first marriage to actress Goldie Hawn and describing how his estrangement from his two children after his divorce affected his subsequent relationships. "Kate doesn't have to talk to me and she doesn't have to give a dime of her millions. All I want is for her to call and say, "Hi grandma", before it's too late," he wrote.
Kate’s powerful vocals are front and center in the new film Song Sung Blue. Song Sung Blue is based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who performed as the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder in the 1980s. Kate stars as Claire Sardina alongside Hugh Jackman, who plays Mike Sardina. The film is directed by Craig Brewer, an American filmmaker best known for Footloose, Hustle & Flow, and Black Snake Moan.
Kate has received a nod in the category of Best Actress for an Academy Award. Her name is alongside Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, Renate Reinsve in Sentimental Value, Emma Stone in Bugonia, and Jessie Buckley in Hamnet.
During her chat on TODAY, Kate shared details of her mom's reaction to her exciting nomination. "There' s an interesting relationship there," she said. "It's not like she doesn't know, she understands it. So I get to share it with her differently than let's say a parent that hadn't had that experience right. So she really knows the inside out of it, so there's a different kind of connective feeling and it;s really special."
