Conan O'Brien has finally broken his silence, two months after his friends, Rob and Michele Reiner, were murdered after attending his annual Christmas party.

The acclaimed filmmaker, 78, and his producer wife, 70, died due to "multiple sharp force injuries" caused "with a knife, by another," on December 14, 2025, their death certificates revealed.

The couple attended Conan's party with their son, Nick, 32, and reportedly had a heated argument with him just hours before their deaths. He was arrested and has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Conan has now spoken about the tragedy for the first time in an interview with The New Yorker, admitting he was "in shock" for an extended period after their deaths.

"It's just so awful," he said. "And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there – and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend."

Reflecting on his relationship with Rob and Michele, Conan said: "I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot.

"My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so – they were just such lovely people. And to have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone… I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward."

Rob and Michele were discovered in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home with stab wounds by their youngest daughter, Romy, who resides in the house across the street.

Nick is being held in jail without bail, but made a brief appearance in court on Wednesday, December 17, after failing to be medically cleared for a court appearance the day prior. He was wearing a blue anti-suicide smock, and he was shackled.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on January 7, but his lawyer, Alan Jackson, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, quit the case. Nick, who was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia in the weeks before his parents' murder, will now be arraigned on February 23.

Nick Reiner (R) has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

If convicted, Nick faces "a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters. "No decision, at this point, has been made with respect to the death penalty."

Rob and Michele's other children, and Nick's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, broke their silence on December 17, 2025, over the "unimaginable pain" they are experiencing following their parents' murder.

"The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience," they said in a statement. "They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."
