Kurt Russell opened up about how proud he is of his daughter, Kate Hudson, following her Academy Award nomination. Kate has received a nod in the category of Best Actress for her role in Song Sung Blue. Her name is alongside Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, Renate Reinsve in Sentimental Value, Emma Stone in Bugonia, and Jessie Buckley in Hamnet.
During an interview with E! News, the 74-year-old gushed over the exciting news. "It's just fun to see," he shared. "For us as a family, it's almost for me, it's like watching an actress in full. It's watching her reach, totally reachable any potential, which was a lot that she had and to do it so slickly, and so smoothly, and so invisibly in that character, so easily."
He continued: "She makes it look effortless. And I think that's an achievement in and of itself in a part like that."
Song Sung Blue is based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who performed as the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder in the 1980s. Kate stars as Claire Sardina alongside Hugh Jackman, who plays Mike Sardina. The film is directed by Craig Brewer, an American filmmaker best known for Footloose, Hustle & Flow, and Black Snake Moan.
Kate's mom, Goldie Hawn, was married to Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982, during which they welcomed two children, Kate and son Oliver Hudson. The siblings had a complicated relationship with Bill, who Goldie previously described as an "absentee father." Kate and Oliver were primarily raised by Goldie and her partner of over 40 years, Kurt, whom they refer to as their "Pa."
During a chat on the TODAY Show this week, Kate shared details of her mom's reaction to her exciting nomination. "There' s an interesting relationship there," she said. "It's not like she doesn't know, she understands it. So I get to share it with her differently than let's say a parent that hadn't had that experience right. So she really knows the inside out of it, so there's a different kind of connective feeling and it;s really special."
Kate previously shared a clip to social media, which saw her video-calling her family as they cheered her on in the background. Goldie could be heard screaming and yelling, "Yay!" as Kate laughed and replied: "Oh my God you guys…Oh my God, I'm so happy!" Beside her was her seven-year-old daughter, Rani, who witnessed the special moment.
The mother of three was previously nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar thanks to her breakout role in Almost Famous in 2000, yet lost the award to Marcia Gay Harden. Goldie won an Oscar herself in 1970 for her performance in Cactus Flower.
