Pokémon celebrated its milestone 30th anniversary on February 27. While the Japanese media franchise has found its way into the hearts and home of its dedicated fanbase in the last few decades, less is known about the mastermind behind the video games.

Satoshi Tajiri is a Japanese video game designer and director best known as the creator of the Pokémon franchise, as well as the co-founder and president of the video game development company Game Freak.

Pokémon stands as the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, with an estimated value surpassing $100 billion as of 2024. Its success is largely engineered by its vast merchandise empire, blockbuster video games, and the success of its trading card game.

However, the personal net worth of the franchise's creator seems surprisingly lower in comparison. In celebration of Pokémon's 30th anniversary, HELLO! takes a closer look at Satoshi's wealth and success.

What is Satoshi Tajiri's net worth?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Satoshi boasts a staggering $10 million fortune. He spent six years developing the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games. He later served as executive producer for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and has contributed to other notable projects, including The Legend of Zelda series and various Mario spin-offs.

Satoshi was born in Setagaya, Tokyo, in 1965, but grew up in Machida, Tokyo. He did not pursue a traditional university education, and instead, he enrolled in a two-year technical program at the National Institute of Technology, Tokyo College, where he focused on electronics and computer science.

In the early 1990s, inspired by his childhood adventures exploring forests and collecting bugs and tadpoles, he conceived the idea for Pokémon. When Satoshi first pitched Pokémon to Nintendo, it was met with enthusiasm. The development of Pokémon Red and Green took six years and nearly drove Game Freak to bankruptcy. During this time, Tajiri did not take a salary, instead he relied on financial support from his father.
