Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's streamlined silhouettes and understated minimalism have long inspired fashion enthusiasts' sartorial agendas. Even before the premiere of Ryan Murphy's Love Story, the miniseries exploring her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn had already transformed the way women dress with a look so distinctly '90s.

The late blonde icon's signature ensembles continue to pepper the mood boards of those today – even some born after her tragic death in 1999. Carolyn's wardrobe was simple yet refined, always finished with a distinctly chic edge. Think an off-the-shoulder bustier paired with an obi-sash skirt suit by Yohji Yamamoto, or a black tank styled with Levi's 517s and Prada sandals.

Carolyn was known for her chic accessories

She could just as effortlessly style baggy carpenter jeans with a black long-sleeve top, flip-flops, sunglasses, and a leather handbag. In true era-defining fashion, she rarely wore color, allowing her monochromatic looks to be elevated by carefully chosen accessories – many of which came with a notable price tag.

HELLO! are taking a look back inside her expansive accessory collection, the finishing touch to her tousled locks and bootcut jeans, imbued with undeniable charm. Each uniform piece boasted the seams and stitches of some of the most coveted labels in fashion history.

Shoes

For daytime dog walks, Carolyn often opted for boots, loafers, kitten heels, or simple flip-flops – frequently designed by Prada. When it came to evening wear, she would typically reach for a pair of heels by Manolo Blahnik.

Bags

The American fashion publicist was no stranger to a practical, heavy-duty bag, and often slung a Hermès Birkin or a Prada Spazzolato tote over her arm. However, for nighttime soirées, she favoured a smaller clutch, often adorned with gold hardware detailing.

Sunglasses

A pair of designer black shades were a key marker of Carolyn's iconography. She typically chose skinny sunglasses with oval lenses, think the chic likes of Selima Optique.

Hair pieces

Carolyn proved that headbands weren’t confined to schoolgirl uniforms, often opting for tortoiseshell styles to sweep back her blonde locks. She also embraced an effortless aesthetic, frequently pulling her hair up with a claw clip and leaving soft, face-framing tendrils loose.

Jewelry and watches

When it came to jewelry, Carolyn kept things refreshingly simple. She often wore a black leather Cartier Tank watch and, when accessorising further, opted for classic gold hoops or pearl stud earrings, paired with her understated wedding band.
