It was the Summer of 1963, when everyone still called Jennifer Grey 'Baby' and it didn't occur to her to mind. In reality, it was the Summer of 1987 when cinema history was made: from that romantic lift to the ever-dreamy Patrick Swayze and a groundbreaking abortion plot line that executives wanted cut from the film, '80s film don't get much more iconic.
We're sneaking into the staff party for a catch up with leading lady Jennifer Grey, heartthrob Johnny Castle and other iconic cast mates that helped carry the film (or watermelon).
Nobody puts Jennifer Grey in a corner! The actress starred as Frances Houseman and established herself as one of the decade's best
Jennifer Grey
Optimistic, driven and kind-hearted, Frances 'Baby' Houseman remains an '80s favourite today – as does the actress who carried that watermelon almost four decades ago. Just a year before, she joined the cast of Ferris Bueller's Day Off as Ferris' sister Jeanie who enjoys a flirtatious moment with Charlie Sheen's character.
She's kept dancing across our screens ever since, with appearances on Red Oaks, A Real Pain and most recently in bittersweet romance Wish You Were Here. Baby's only baby Stella, born in 2001, is quickly making a name for herself in the industry.
Johnny Castle remains an onscreen heartthrob to this day for his rhythm and frankness
Patrick Swayze
Johnny Castle always does the last dance of the season, taught us to feel the beat and to never (ever!) go into your partner's dance space. Patrick Swayze danced his way into viewers' hearts, earned three nominations for a Golden Globe and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Patrick was best known for iconic hits like The Outsiders, Road House and Ghost. He married Lisa Niemi in 1975 and remained with her until his death in 2009.
Kelly Bishop's Marjorie Houseman is largely to thank for dragging her husband away from work and setting the stage for Baby's adventure
Kelly Bishop
According to Kelly Bishop's Marjorie Houseman, Baby gets her musical talent from her mother's side. Marjorie appears to have more in common with Baby's sister Lisa through the film, but it seems there are hidden depths to the matriarch – perhaps something for the sequel?
When not tearing it up on the dance floor with husband, Dr Jake Houseman, Kelly Bishop is best known for her role as Emily Gilmore in cosy drama Gilmore Girls and recently appeared in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and 2025 series Étoile. She was married to US tv personality Lee Leonard until his death in 2018.
Jerry Orbach goes through his own parental coming-of-age at Kellerman's
Jerry Orbach
Three-time Emmy nominated actor Jerry Orbach admits when he's wrong. But it doesn't seem he's ever gone wrong in his career choices: from voicing Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast (1991) to working on over 250 episodes of Law & Order, including spin-offs.
Jerry passed away in December 2004, leaving behind wife Elaine Cancilla Orbach and two sons, Chris Orbach and Anthony Orbach, who both appeared in the Law & Order franchise.
No spaghetti arms allowed! Dirty Dancing defined '80s cinema for many fans with their own Hungry Eyes plastered to the screen
Dancing into the history books
Dirty Dancing has brought joy to generations of fans, launching sequels, remakes, books, merchandise and themed getaways to Kellerman's itself (aka Mountain Lake Lodge in Virginia).
The film follows Frances 'Baby' Houseman on holiday with her family at Kellerman's Resort. When she meets dance instructor Johnny Castle, he opens her eyes to the world she's so far been protected from.
I'll have what she's having! As you wish... The '80s brought some iconic leading ladies to our screens but what have they been up to since finding onscreen romance?
