Meet 80s star Mare Winningham's five children - including her son who followed her into acting

The St. Elmo's Fire and Philomena actress has been working in the industry since 1976 so its no wonder this stalwart of the screen inspired her children to keep creativity on the mind. Mare Winningham's five kids were born with just seven years between the eldest and youngest, proving the actress' talent in managing stardom alongside a growing family behind the screen.

Riley Mapel was the eldest child of Mare and then-husband William

Riley Mapel, 1981

Mare Winningham's first child, son Riley, was born to the actress and TV tech advisor William Mapel in 1981. 

He tragically passed at the age of 23 in 2005. At the time of his death, Riley was studying acting in Los Angeles.

Patrick has worked both in front of the camera and behind the lens as a writer, director and actor

Patrick Mapel, 1983

Patrick shares brother Riley's passion for performance and has forged a successful career as an actor. The actor, director and writer has been involved in several projects, including The Social Network, The Artist and a brief stint on Mad Men.

For now, it seems as though he's taking a break from entertainment, with his last project dating back to 2017. Patrick chooses to keep his private life out of the public eye and it's not known whether he has a partner or children.

Jack is the middle child of William Mapel and Mare Winningham

Jack Mapel, 1985

Her third son, Jack Mapel, was born during Mare Winngham's marriage to William in 1985. He is one of two middle sons, together with elder brother Patrick and is an older brother to his only sister and one younger brother.

Like his brother Patrick Jack has opted for a life out of the spotlight so details about Mare's third child are sparse.

Calla Louise Mapel is the only daughter of Mare and William

Calla Louise Mapel, 1987

Calla Louise Mapel was born in 1987 and is the only daughter of actress Mare Winningham. She is the older sister of Happy Atticus Mapel, and the younger sister of three of her siblings.

Like several of her brothers, Calla Louise keeps her life out of the spotlight, opting not to pursue a monitored life like her mother's.

The youngest of five, Happy Atticus Mapel is the last child Mare Winningham welcomed

Happy Atticus Mapel, 1988

Happy Atticus Mapel is the youngest child of Mare Winningham and her ex-husband William. He was born on 13 September 1988 and was the last child the actress welcomed.

Happy it seems is, well, happy enough away from the spotlight and, like many of his siblings, doesn't make a habit of sharing details from his life.

Mare has been married four times, and most recently tied the knot in 2021

Married life

The Turner & Hooch actress has been married a total of four times. She first tied the knot with actor and writer A. Martinez in 1981, divorcing the following year. Following their split, she said 'I do' to William Mapel, enjoying a successful 14 years of marriage and welcoming their five children together.

Twelve years after their separation, Mare married artist Jason Trucco in 2008, and the couple parted ways four years later. Most recently, Mare wed now-husband Anthony Edwards in 2021 and the two seem to have found their happily ever after.

Mare has been active on screen as recently as 2024 so it doesn't seem likely she'll give up the screen for good any time soon

Where is she now?

Mare has over 100 projects listed on her IMDb, with her most recent projects including 2024's Rob Peace, 2021 TV mini series Dopesick and supernatural horror The Outsider in 2020.

The actress has been nominated eight times for a Primetime Emmy and won twice for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1980 for Amber Waves and in 1998 for her role in George Wallace.
