Kate Hudson is a doting mom-of-three, and is preparing for a new milestone involving her firstborn, Ryder, 22.
The Hollywood star is set to fly to New York City in just a few weeks to be there to watch her son graduate from college.
The doting mom opened up about the bittersweet end of an era during an interview on Today. She said: "He is graduating, like in weeks."
Kate then told host Craig Melvin that Ryder was an actor, but that he had another talent that he was also passionate about making furniture - something she's encouraging him to do after college. He's an actor and likes to make furniture," she said.
"He loves designing furniture, and he's making a sofa right now, which I'm really excited about." She then joked: "I'm like, 'Maybe go in that direction, Ryder.'"
This isn't the first time Kate has opened up about Ryder's graduation. She recently revealed that it will be extra special for her family, as he's the first to graduate from college. She told Entertainment Tonight: "He’s graduating from college this year, can't believe it, so exciting. I think he’s the first in like three generations to graduate from college."
On her son's acting career, Kate added that he was dedicated to the craft and "wants to be doing good work". "He’s really focusing on college, he’s not trying to get in front of the camera just to get in front of a camera," she explained. "I think when you grow up in our family… you gotta understand the craft and believe it in a different way if you’re gonna do it," Kate added.
Kate is also mom to son Bingham, 14, who she shares with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani, seven, who she shares with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.
The Almost Famous actress has been open about parenting in a blended family, and how everyone has a good relationship. "It might not look traditional from the outside, but on the inside I feel like we're killing it," she told The Times. "The unit that I've created with three children with three different fathers is a seriously strong unit, and it's ours."
Kate's incredibly close to her parents and siblings too, and credits her parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell - who she calls 'Pa' - for helping her stay grounded and hardworking, despite growing up with famous parents.
"Thank God I had a mom who said, 'Make your own way,'" she told Variety. "When you become successful in the arts – and what I mean by 'successful' is when you’re making other people a lot of money – people really like to put you in a box. But nobody becomes an artist to be put in a cage."
She continued: "As you get older, you realize you’re the only one who makes the decision not to allow yourself to be in that cage. It means having to make fearless and risk-taking decisions that are really, really hard to do when you have a status quo that’s safe."
