The Today Show switched things up on April 28, with the hosts travelling to Springfield, Missouri, for a Route 66 road trip. However, the exciting change took an unexpected turn when Dylan Dreyer, Al Roker, and their NBC team became stranded in the airport.
Dylan took to her Instagram Stories to document the group's long wait in the airport prior to boarding their flight. The first photograph showed Dylan waiting with her suitcase as she looked down at her phone. "We're still in the airport…," she penned. The next snap captured Dylan showing a video of her children to her co-star Al. "We're so bored, it's gotten to the point I'm sharing videos of the kids with @alroker … and @yoyosafe is … dancing?" she added
The accompanying social media post featured a photo of Dylan fast asleep on a leather armchair, while her team gathered around her. "I'm done. Free toothbrushes! Thanks @delta!"
Dylan also shared a selfie alongside her makeup artist. The NBC star wore a baby blue knitted top with a pair of light-wash jeans. "Well…makeup is still kinda on since 5am for us," she penned.
The final post was a video capturing Dylan as she emerged from the restroom, with Al applauding her return. "Now everyone is just delirious…@alroker starting a clap as I return from the dang bathroom," she wrote.
The news of the special episode was announced back in March. "The 3rd Hour of TODAY anchors are motoring west and heading to Springfield, Missouri, for what we're calling Destination: Route 66!" read the Today Show Instagram caption.
"On Thursday, April 30, Al Roker and Dylan Dryer will be broadcasting LIVE from downtown Springfield — and we're inviting you to get your kicks on Route 66 and experience the city's one-of-a-kind culture at Birthplace Plaza."
"We'll take you along for an incredible tour of everything the city has to offer — from local food and music to the stories that made Route 66 famous. We'll even catch up with legendary actor and proud Missouri State alum, John Goodman! Join Al and Dylan as they experience all that Springfield has to offer and get a firsthand look at America’s most famous highway."
Co-hosts
Al previously spoke to us about the great dynamic he shares with his co-stars. "The great thing about the Today Show" is that "the sum is greater than its equal parts," he exclusively shared.
"They've all subbed, they've all stepped in, and we don't miss a beat. So no matter what happens, we're going to be in great shape," Al ensured, noting that the show, which has been on the air since 1952, is "built to evolve."
