Gwen Farrell has died at the age of 93. The Hollywood actress passed away in Los Angeles on Thursday, April 30, with the news confirmed by her son Keith Farrell a day later. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Gwen was best known for her appearances in the hit war comedy-drama M*A*S*H, where she portrayed a nurse across 26 episodes beginning in 1972. While her on-screen career included a number of film and television roles throughout the 1970s, her life story extended far beyond Hollywood.

Born in Austin, Texas, Gwen went on to appear in projects including Coffy, Earthquake and Billy Jack Goes to Washington, as well as an uncredited early role in the 1972 action film Black Gunn. She also featured in the sci-fi thriller Soylent Green.

In a statement shared via a GoFundMe page launched to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, Gwen’s family paid tribute to her remarkable life.

"Today, our family is heartbroken to share the passing of Gwen Farrell Adair," the message read, describing her as someone who "lived a life full of strength, character and quiet resilience".

While acknowledging her time on screen, her loved ones emphasised that her legacy was defined by much more than her acting work.

"Her journey was anything but ordinary," they wrote. "She had a brief moment on screen… but her true legacy was built in the real world through her strength, her presence and the way she carried herself every single day."

In 1980, Gwen embarked on a new and unexpected chapter, becoming a referee in the boxing world – a move that saw her break barriers in a male-dominated sport.

"With confidence, fairness and unwavering composure, she earned the respect of fighters, trainers and fans alike," her family shared. "She didn’t just do the job; she proved that strength comes in many forms."

Away from her professional life, Gwen was deeply devoted to her family. Her loved ones described her as a "guiding light" and a constant source of support, adding that she had a unique ability to make those around her feel understood and cared for.

Her passing has left what the family called "a deep void", though they also expressed gratitude for the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.

Gwen was also part of a notable family legacy – her mother, Lovie Yancey, founded the American restaurant chain Fatburger.

As tributes continue to emerge, Gwen is being remembered not only for her time on screen, but for a life marked by resilience, reinvention and quiet strength.
