James Bolam has a career dating back to the early 1960s, and the 90-year-old actor has managed to land several legendary roles during his career.

The star got his breakout in role in 1964, when he appeared in the lead role of BBC sitcom The Likely Lads as Terry Collier. The show followed Terry and best friend Bob Ferris, played by Rodney Bewes, as they attempted to enjoy the 'Swinging Sixties' despite their small incomes. He also appeared in the same role in the sitcom's sequel, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?.

James continued to find TV work, appearing in the likes of When the Boat Comes In, Only When I Laugh, Room at the Bottom and Second Thoughts. However, it was in the 00s when he became acquainted with modern audiences, appearing in popular detective drama New Tricks.

James played former DCS Jack Halford in the first eight seasons of the show, with his character dying of a terminal illness off-screen. He made a couple of guest appearances in the show in its ninth and tenth seasons.

However, away from his life of fame, the star is married to actress Susan Jameson. However, the star prefers to keep much of his life private, once remarking: "I'm having a man fix the track rods on my car. I don't want to know anything about him. Why should he want to know anything about me?"
