Kevin Whately is one of the most iconic faces in the detective genre, with the star having played Robert 'Robbie' Lewis for 22 years, stretching across stints on Inspector Morse and Lewis.
The character initially served as the sidekick to DCI Morse, who was played by John Thaw, another iconic British detective, before finally being promoted to the rank of inspector when Lewis started airing.
However, Kevin also has several other iconic roles, appearing as Nev Hope in classic comedy drama Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and as Jack Kerruish in 90s medical drama Peak Practice. The star has also appeared in the likes of The Broker's Man, Hilltop Hospital, Midsomer Murders and Vera.
Away from the fame, the 75-year-old has been married to wife Madelaine Newton since 1984, with the pair sharing two children. Like her husband, Madelaine is also in the entertainment industry, and she's appeared alongside him in several shows.
Here's all you need to know about the couple…
Kevin's wife Madelaine Newton
Like her husband, Madelaine is an accomplished actress, with her largest role being in the classic BBC period drama, When the Boat Comes In. The actress played Dolly Mather across 30 episodes of the show, which ran from 1976 until 1981.
While some acting couples might avoid acting with one another, this isn't the case for Madelaine and Kevin who have acted together on numerous occasions. The duo have appeared together in the likes of Inspector Morse, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Joe Maddison's War and Geordie Racer; in the latter show, the pair played a married couple.
In an interview with The Times in 2019, Kevin revealed that he and his wife were both born in the same town, although they grew up separately and never met each other during their respective youths.
"We were actually born three weeks apart in the same town, Hexham in Northumberland, but we didn't know each other as kids," he explained. "That shared history helped us 'click'. As soon as we met, that was it."
Kevin and Madelaine are parents to children Kitty and Kieran. Kitty is a professional opera mezzo-soprano, while Kieran has remained out of the spotlight. Due to his career, Kevin was occasionally absent from his children's lives, and in the same interview with the Times, he joked: "I was filming in Germany for weeks at a time, which meant that Madelaine was left with the lion's share of all the baby stuff. The funny thing is that when Kitty had kids, I finally had a chance to do my bit."
Reflecting on growing up with a famous dad, Kitty told the publication: "Dad didn't make a big thing about being on television. He loved his job and was very grateful for what the character of Lewis gave him, but I always felt he was at his happiest when he was dragging us all through the woods on another weekend hike, waxing lyrical about some tree he'd seen."
