Looking for a crime drama to binge-watch this weekend? The popular period detective series, Miss Scarlet, returned with its sixth season this week – and if you love twisty mysteries, slow-burn romance and a stylish and moody London setting, then it could be worth putting on your watchlist.
The series, which first premiered in 2020, follows the titular investigator (played by Kate Phillips), who takes over her father's detective business to crack puzzling cases in Victorian London.
In early seasons of the show, Scarlet worked alongside childhood friend, Scotland Yard detective William 'The Duke' Wellington (Stuart Martin), before police inspector Alexander Blake (Tom Durant-Pritchard) took over as her detective partner in season five.
The series, which holds an impressive 88 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has been hailed as "phenomenal" and is hugely popular amongst fans of cosy crime. Keep reading to find out all about the new season.
What happens in season six?
Season five ended with Eliza accepting Blake's invitation to come into his home, signalling that a romance could finally be on the cards for the colleagues.
The new season follows the duo as they navigate their evolving relationship. While Eliza might be an expert in solving mysteries, she finds herself in uncharted territory when it comes to love. Can she juggle the demands of her professional and personal life?
The synopsis reads: "As Eliza and Blake’s once-fraught relationship begins to evolve, they find that working together may be a tricky prospect. Meanwhile, newlyweds Ivy and Potts adjust to married life, a new detective settles in at Scotland Yard, and Nash causes chaos, even from across the globe."
Who stars in season six?
Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders) leads the cast as the headstrong sleuth Miss Scarlet, alongside Tom Durant-Pritchard (The Forsytes) as Detective Inspector Alexander Blake.
Other returning cast members include Cathy Belton (Philomena) as housekeeper Ivy, Paul Bazely (Benidorm) as Clarence, Simon Ludders (Broadchurch) as Mr. Potts and Felix Scott (The Archers) as Patrick Nash.
What have critics said about the show?
The drama has received positive reviews from critics over its six-year run. In its three-star review, The Guardian commented on the "pleasingly light" tone, "lively" pacing and the "will-they-won't-they flirtation" that bubbles between Scarlet and The Duke.
Meanwhile, The Independent described the show as a "feminist crimebuster," noting that the drama "stays expertly on the chaste side of parody, while not taking itself entirely seriously".
