For more than four decades, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories. But away from the bright lights of Los Angeles and the glamour of red carpets, the couple have quietly built a life that is worlds away from showbusiness.
The long-time partners, who first fell in love in the early 1980s, have created a peaceful retreat in Colorado where they embrace the slower rhythms of rural living, something Kurt says has become increasingly meaningful as the years go by.
Speaking at the premiere of his new television series The Madison in London, the 73-year-old actor reflected on how the couple’s life in the countryside has shaped him.
"As you get older and you begin to sort of look at your life as a whole, I’m really glad that I made some of the choices I made," he shared.
"One of those was moving to Colorado. I was fortunate that Goldie loves Colorado. She really wanted to go there, and we get there as much as we possibly can. It’s a draw for me."
While both stars have spent decades at the centre of Hollywood, Kurt explained that the quietness of the countryside offers something that city life simply cannot.
"I think urban life has great value," he said thoughtfully. "But when you’re in the country you have time for self-reflection.
"That’s something people of any age shouldn’t forget. There’s something about being close to the land that reminds you of things about yourself that you can lose in an urban environment."
For Kurt and Goldie, the Colorado escape offers exactly that sense of grounding. Surrounded by nature and far from the noise of the entertainment industry, the couple can focus on what matters most: family, reflection and the simple pleasures of life.
Their bond has stood the test of time, with the pair famously choosing not to marry despite being together for more than forty years. Together they share a son, actor Wyatt Russell, while Kurt is also a devoted stepfather to Goldie’s children from her previous marriage, including actress Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.
Over the years the blended family has remained incredibly close, often sharing glimpses of their gatherings and celebrations. For Goldie and Kurt, their Colorado retreat has become a cherished place where those family connections can flourish away from the spotlight.
Kurt’s reflections on rural life come as he prepares to appear in The Madison, a new series that explores themes of grief, family and healing set against the rugged backdrop of Montana.
The show follows a New York family navigating loss while adjusting to life in a rural environment, something Kurt says resonates deeply with the personal clarity that country living can bring.
The series also stars Patrick J Adams, who revealed that the role arrived during a particularly emotional chapter in his own life.
"We had lost my stepfather a year beforehand," Patrick explained. "That first year of grief is such a profound time. A sudden loss can completely knock your world sideways."
When the script for The Madison arrived, he said the story immediately struck a chord.
"It just made perfect sense to me," he said. "It’s such a beautiful meditation on grief, and on people coming from the city and suddenly finding themselves out of their element in the countryside."
Patrick believes the series ultimately highlights the importance of connection and community during life’s most difficult moments.
"We live very isolated lives these days," he reflected. "We’re on our phones and our screens so much that we don’t always talk to each other like we should.
"When something really difficult happens, if you don’t pull together you can fall apart." The actor hopes viewers will take away a powerful message from the series.
"You can live in your little bubble, but when real life arrives you realise how important it is to have the people you love around you."
For Kurt, the themes of reflection and connection explored in The Madison mirror the lessons he has already found in his own life away from Hollywood. And if there is one thing he is certain about, it is that the peaceful lifestyle he shares with Goldie in Colorado has helped shape the man he is today.
