Matthew Macfadyen is used to striking business deals as Tom Wambsgans in Succession, and it seems that behind the scenes, he also has a savvy side. In 2023, the actor, 51, and his Miss Austin star wife Keeley Hawes, 50, sold their London home and banked a profit.

Matthew purchased a two-storey detached Victorian house in Twickenham for £2.25 million in 2016. In 2023, the Pride and Prejudice star sold the property for £3.5 million, pocketing £1.25 million in the process.

Matthew and Keeley transform their home

During their tenancy, Matthew and Keeley renovated their six-bedroom pad. In 2018, Matthew was granted permission by Richmond Council to demolish two-storey extensions on one side of the house and replace them with a single-storey conservatory.

He was also permitted a first-floor roof terrace accessible from the master bedroom. According to Notting Hill-based architect Hackett Holland's design statement to the council, the house had been extended into the garden by previous owners.

'These extensions are architecturally chaotic and have a negative impact on the streetscape,' the firm stated. Keeley and Matthew's renovations were intended to replace the extension with the conservatory to "lead to an overall reduction in built volume, but will open up the original rooms to the garden".

The Daily Mail reported that the renovation made the property 15 per cent smaller overall. Since offloading their southwest London pad, the couple, along with their children, Maggie, 21, and Ralph, 19, and Keeley's 25-year-old son Myles from a previous marriage, have moved to Chelsea, after purchasing a £3.95 million four-storey terraced townhouse.

In 2023, they made an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show, posing for photos alongside former Loose Women star Lisa Maxwell and Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer, Neil Jones.

Keeley's London upbringing

Though Matthew was raised in Great Yarmouth, Keeley is at home in the English capital. "I grew up very centrally, so I feel very comfortable there," she told Fabric magazine in 2020. The star of hit shows such as Bodyguard and The Durrells lived in a three-bedroom ground-floor council flat on Harewood Avenue, in Marylebone, until she was 16.

In 2011, Keeley told The Times of her childhood home: "My mum was very house-proud – if we had any spare money, it would go on decorating. The result was hilarious. We had lots of authentic brassware around a fireplace, but you could clearly see it was an electric fire.

"She was quite partial to terrible little figurines on top of the television cabinet. She also loved animals — we had a standard poodle, Becky, and a big white Persian cat."

Of the prime location, the Rebecca star added: "It's incredible to have grown up within walking distance of Marble Arch -  I don't know anybody else who has had that sort of childhood. I could see Marylebone station from my bedroom window."
