The King had the perfect response after an onlooker criticised his cake-cutting skills during a visit to Northern Ireland last week.

Charles, 77, and his wife Queen Camilla attempted to serve a slice at the Warehouse Community Centre in Newtownards, Co Down – but things didn't go entirely smoothly.

The royal couple cut the cake to great applause; however, the plate underneath kept moving, and the cake nearly fell off the table.

One onlooker joked that the rather messy slice of cake could be served on crackers. Laughing, the King quipped back, "You have to have that for your lunch."

Looking closer at the cake, which was covered in sprinkles, he said: "It does look very good."

Charles had helped out in the kitchen by stirring up a gluten-free chocolate cake mix.

The former pub has been repurposed as a volunteer-supported facility that provides free food supplies and meals to people in need, using excess produce from supermarkets and other suppliers that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Head chef at the centre, Dawn Stewart, gave Charles some tips as he whisked up the cake mix. "His mixing was very good," she said afterwards. "I was very impressed."

Operations manager at the Warehouse, Megan Weimann, said: "Our chefs make everything, from starter, main course and dessert, and we serve lunch Tuesday to Thursday, and then a breakfast on a Friday."

"The king very kindly agreed to do a chocolate cake for us. So, it was great," she said. "That’ll be our VIP dessert tomorrow."

King's visit to Sandringham without Andrew

Last week, the King and Queen undertook a surprise three-day visit to Northern Ireland, with many engagements spotlighting Ireland's rich cultural heritage.

The King did not visit his disgraced brother over the weekend

Over the weekend, Charles returned to Sandringham in Norfolk for a "private" stay to recuperate from royal engagements over the Bank Holiday.

Charles, 77, reportedly arrived at Wood Farm Cottage at his Norfolk residence on Sunday, the same secluded property where Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was temporarily housed after leaving Royal Lodge in Windsor. Andrew is just a short distance away at five-bedroom farmhouse, Marsh Farm.

However, HELLO! understands that the King did not pay a visit to his disgraced brother. Charles has distanced himself from Andrew since his arrest in February and is not believed to be in contact with him.
