And just like that, Law & Order lost another of its arms earlier this month, with the surprise cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime.

The seventh show in the long-running procedural franchise, it starred Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler running his very own unit, a spin-off of the larger Law & Order that followed more of a "single-arc" structure versus the other series.

"Law & Order: Organized Crime" was cancelled after five seasons

On April 16, 2026, it was announced that the show had been canceled after five seasons on the air. While it had been nearly a year since its last season premiered, the spin-off was on the lookout for a new showrunner to take charge.

Lead Christopher, 65, shared his response to the news, thanking fans of the show with an emotional video message for "not only giving the character of Elliot Stabler longevity" but also for "sticking with him and welcoming him back," calling it a "great ride," and captioning it: "Thank you OC/SVU fans. You gave me a life."

He later poked fun at the news with a new set of photos shared over the weekend from a dinner in Los Angeles with none other than his longtime best friend and Law & Order co-star Mariska Hargitay, who leads the longest running of the spin-offs, Special Victims Unit.

"What one does on a random Thursday when still in LA and freshly unemployed. Dinner hang with pals," he captioned the selfies of the pair from their outing, then including a surprise cameo from none other than Rachel McAdams, who posed for a selfie with Mariska.

Fans were thrilled at the sight of the reunion between the friends and co-stars, reacting to the photos with comments like: "Ok spill the tea on the conversation in picture one! Mariska's facial expression is priceless! And these pictures we needed to wrap up our week too!" and: "I better see Stabler in at least one episode of svu season 28!!!" as well as: "CHRISKA NATION WE RIDE AGAIN!"

Although, we may not have to wait long to see Christopher back on our screens, as he is set to appear in This is Us creator Dan Fogelman's upcoming Hulu sports drama The Land, a family drama set within the NFL.

Christopher will play the lead character of head coach Danny, with others in the cast including Mandy Moore, Chloe Bennett, Chace Crawford and William H. Macy. While very few details of the show are currently public (it did officially enter production for a pilot), William shared some more details with Deadline of the series.

"It's about a football team, nominally the Cleveland Browns. It's called The Land because that's what people from Cleveland call it. I play the owner of the team," he noted. "They're brilliant scripts. They're Shakespearean. It's about football, but, oh, my lord, the plots are so profound, and I'm having the time of my life."
