Anne Hathaway infused her sartorial agenda with a dose of 60s edge, as she appeared on the April 29 episode of the Today Show to promote The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The actress delved deep into the Chanel archives for her latest television appearance. Anne wore a sequin shift mini dress plucked from the French maison's fall/winter 2017 runway collection. The black-and-white number boasts a chequered print embellished with intricate sequins. With a high neckline, long sleeves, and A-line silhouette, it embodies the elegance of swinging 60s fashion.
The era saw a striking transition from the hourglass silhouettes that peppered the fashion sphere of the 50s. The shift dress was rather suited to column body shapes, with a straight up-and-down outline that offers no waist definition. The style of the 60s championed bold prints, knee-high boots, oversized sunglasses, and clashing patterns. As a fashion writer, it's clear to see how the style codes of the iconic era have informed Anne's Chanel dress.
Anne has been busy serving up a fashion marathon while promoting the new sequel. Her stylist, Erin Walsh, has curated a press tour wardrobe that boasts some of the most covetable high-fashion labels. "I’m aware of the eyeballs on it," Erin told British Vogue. "But I feel like I’ve been training my whole life to do this. There’s always pressure: It’s what we do and what we love."
She continued: "It's been an exercise of joy – having the opportunity to tie in layers of Andy [Sachs] with Annie, and playing with all of the different designers."
"If you look at all the major houses that have these new [designers] leading them, there’s this idea of leaning into joy, and clothes that make you feel like the supernova version of yourself. It’s going to be joyful, irreverent, empowering, confident – and strong."
Today interview
Anne was joined by her co-stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci for the Today interview. "I think people are hungry for it," said Stanlet about the sequel. "Arguably, it has become a classic film. It endures, and people seem to have not been able to get enough of us. So here we are."
"This film certainly changed my life in a huge way. It was touching and moving and weird to be back together," added Emily. "Obviously, a lot has happened in 20 years. We’ve had kids."
"Aline McKenna cracked it, and she found a reason why we should make it beyond just nostalgia, beyond just giving people what they want," Anne explained. "She found something new and more to say with these characters, and so I felt like that actually took a lot of the pressure off. Then it was just back to what we do every time."
