Laura Dern had a tight-knit bond with her mother Diane Ladd, who sadly passed away last year on November 3, at the age of 89.
The Oscar-nominated actress died due to "acute chronic hypoxic respiratory failure," per People.
Laura credits her mom for inspiring her to dream big and to focus on the important things in life.
© Getty ImagesThe actress shared on CBS Sunday Morning: "Of the many gifts of having Diane as my mom, [was] watching her at every age, in every experience, never give up on a dream, [which] has been one of the great inspirations of my life."
She continued: "Always finding the glass half full, always building onto dreams and knowing that self-love is the ultimate goal, and guiding me to remembering that in myself."
Their joint projects
© Getty ImagesThe dynamic duo appeared in several projects together including The Siege at Ruby Ridge, and they also co-authored their joint memoir titled, "Honey, Baby, Mine."
Laura found "healing" in working on the book together, being that they spoke about difficult moments in the past that they've previously pushed under the rug.
© Getty ImagesDiane revealed to People: "As parents we do not tell our children all of our truths because we want to be loved and respected. So honestly, we lie a little."
She continued: "What I discovered is that there were things I hadn't told her that I should have because I felt it would make her feel guilty or burdened. Instead, it was a release for her."
Laura continued: "We both longed to talk about the things that we've left unsaid in our life together. The places we didn't go because we didn't want to hurt each other by bringing up heartbreak or trauma."

Family ties

The two got married in 1960 and welcomed Diane Elizabeth Dern and then Laura into the world.
Their daughter Diane tragically passed away at 18 months old due to a drowning accident while in the care of a nanny.
The pair called it quits once Laura turned two, and the actress was primarily raised by her mother.
