Beyoncé made her Met Gala debut in 2008, the same year she released her third studio album, I am… Sasha Fierce. She wore a strapless pale-pink Armani Privé gown, embellished with a sweetheart neckline. The look was far more understated than her future outfits.
Three years later, Beyoncé returned to the Met Gala wearing an embroidered black-and-gold mermaid gown with a high neckline and a lace-trimmed cutout, designed by Emilio Pucci. The tight bodice and fishtail silhouette made it almost impossible for Beyoncé to walk up the iconic Met steps.
But her husband Jay Z and stylist TyHunter stepped in to carry the singer to the top. Beyoncé wore her hair in a simple chignon, with minimal makeup and Sergio Rossi heels.

In 2012, the singer wore a dress that might've given birth to one of her most famous lines – "I'm so reckless when I rock my Givenchy dress." Beyoncé donned a Givenchy jewel-embellished gown with an ombré feathered trainwhen she decided to attend the Met Gala at the last minute.
The "Ya Ya" singer had just given birth to daughter Blue Ivy a few months before and was rehearsing for The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. The day of the event, Beyoncé told her stylist, Ty, that she wanted to go and in just a few hours, they pulled the now iconic look together.
We didn't yet know how much Beyoncé would change the music world at the 2013 Met Gala. But in just a few months, she would drop her self-titled fifth studio album, an album that defined the era and modernized album releases forever.
At the Met Gala that year, she wore another Givenchy gown, this time a black, leather strapless look with an ornate design on the bodice. Beyoncé styled the gown with black gloves and thigh-high boots for the punk theme.
Just a year later, Beyoncé wore an elegant, sheer black embellished Givenchy Haute Couture gown, with a deep-V cut mirrored by a thigh-high slit up the middle of the gown. She paired it with a netted veil and red-and-black earrings, wearing a similar colored lipstick.
In what is probably Beyoncé's most iconic Met Gala look, the "Halo" singer wore a completely sheer Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci custom-made gown. The gown was covered with Swarovski crystals and stones and featured a back cutout and bejeweled train.
While the heavy and sheer gown caught onlookers' attention, Beyoncé's over-the-shoulder pose showing off her high ponytail was the real eye-catcher.
