One of ITV's most popular hits in the 1990s was the Sharpe series of television films, which were based on the book series of the same name by Bernard Cornwell. The show followed a soldier in the Napoleonic era and was set between 1803 and 1818.
The 16-part series aired between 1993 and 2008, and made household names out of its stars, including Sean Bean, Daniel Craig, Brian Cox, Daragh O'Malley and Assumpta Serna.
The latter initially found fame in her native Spain, appearing in the likes of Matador, I, the Worst of All and Managua, before landing roles in American films like The Craft, Chain of Desire and The Shooter.
Over in the UK, Assumpta was best known for her work in the first four editions of Sharpe, in which she played Spanish guerrilla fighter Teresa. The 68-year-old also entertained viewers in Falcon Crest, Henry VIII and Borgia.
However, it was her work on Sharpe that changed her life, as the actress ended up falling for one of her co-stars, Scott Cleverdon, with the pair marrying a year after meeting on the popular ITV drama. Scroll down for all you need to know about the couple…
Assumpta's husband Scott Cleverdon
Born on 31 July 1969, Scott is his wife's junior by 12 years. The pair first crossed paths when they appeared in Sharpe, with Scott playing Harry Price, an officer serving under Sharpe, played by Sean Bean. Scott only appeared in one of the show's 16 films, with the character dying in order to protect Assumpta's character.
Scott and Assumpta married a year after meeting on the set of Sharpe, and Scott went on to appear in the likes of The Prophecy 3: The Ascent, The Amazing Grace, Tortilla Heaven and Beverly Hills, 90210.
The star also found fame as a voice actor, playing Jack in Batman Beyond, Carnage in Spider-Man: The Animated Series and providing several voices for Disney series Gargoyles. In 2007, he stood back from acting, although he briefly returned in 2022 to dub several voices for The Dog Knight.
Although Assumpta and Scott reunited on screen with Borgia, the pair have been working together since Assumpta published her book, El Trabajo del Actor de Cine. The duo now live in Madrid, where they both teach film acting.
The pair never welcomed their own children, with Assumpta going through early menopause. Speaking in a joint interview with Spanish publication Ella El Abanico, Scott mused: "The whim isn't because you want a son or a daughter, etc., you know, it's that two people combine and want to create another one."
Assumpta then added: "We considered adoption and went to complete all the paperwork, but the biggest problem we encountered was the system. We didn't like the method at all. In the end, you have to buy a child. It's that simple, that harsh.
"The counterpart to not having children is a life full of many things, many people, many people that would have been impossible to do if we had had two children, three children or one child."
